I replaced mine with a rebuilt Denso from O'Reilly based on a recommendation from a fellow mudder. Only 3 months old, but working great so far.

Don't have one on the LX, but I installed the 270XP on the 80 at around 211k around 2-3 years ago. Haven't had any issues with mine. Currently have 223k on the clock. Pretty anecdotal, but I've been happy with mine.

Those are junk. Very high failure rate. And to utilize the high output you need to upgrade your battery cables too.

You have anymore info on the high failure rates? I can't really seem to find many folks that even run these on their 80 or 100 series.

My alternator started whining about 4 months ago. It's louder/worse when there is electrical draw like lights or right after start up. Still seems to be working fine bur I'm nearing 180,00 and the wining is anoying. My mechanic said $486 to replace with reman denso. Not sure I'm crazy about that. I value reliability above all else with our cruiser. What's my best option?

Replace it yourself, a reman Denso is 115.99 with core return from Rock Auto. OEM / OEM reman or bust, the moment you start replacing parts with non-oem standard, you will not have that legendary reliability.

or can keep your oem alternator and replace with a reman direct from toyota for $145 or from Denso.

You can then reman your oem and keep as spare

Thanks guys. I hear mixed things like "Denso is the same as oem." And the contradictory statement "Denso is bad and unreliable." not really sure what's right bit if I can get an oem for $145, it seams like a no brainier. It's been whining for a while and working fine but we are about get into the off grid and road trip part of the year and I want to get it fixed before our trips start.

Thanks for the links.

Just checked that toyotapartsdeal.com link. Wow! Add shipping and core charge and cost is $256.00. That's a lot more than $145. I'm assuming that doesn't include return shipping. Why is shipping nearly $40? I realize it's heavy. But it's not that heavy. May still be the best option. Especially if I don't want to wait to have mine rebuilt. Also is rebuilt Denso the same as oem? If so why are some people saying they are junk?

Denso is OEM for most parts, and very high quality. However, there is a huge problem with counterfeit parts that are made in China with cheap parts and not to spec but are labeled and sold as Denso. Order from a reputable place like RockAuto or a Toyota dealer. Ebay and Amazon can be hit or miss. I installed a Pure Power alternator I got from Tuscon Alternator. Made in USA. 240 amps, stock is ~110 amps. I also upgraded to 4 AWG cable.

Mine started the whine last month. Battery light came on a few days ago. Had mine replaced and went with OEM reman. $240 (minus $75 core return). 27060-50260-84

Did you happen to note the lengths of your upgraded cables? I would also like to upgrade mine in the future with a higher output unit.

You guys make me worrie , I have 350 Km on the clock and the Alt. Is working fine .
Still the 1 alternator from factory
But can't think of been left on foot by it .
Might be a good idea , to take it apart and inspect it ?

I followed the link above for a 2000 Land Cruiser alternator. Then chose 2001 (cause mine is an '01)Land Cruiser alternator from the catalogue. They are different prices,('01 is cheaper) different amp rating, different part number. Is that right? I woulda thought they were the same.

Also. Want to be clear. If I order a remanufactured Denso from Rockauto it's the same as the OEM from Toyota parts deal? '01 Denso alternator from Rockauto is $144 which includes core and shipping. That's a big savings over $256.

The pulley is slightly smaller than OEM, otherwise, it fits perfectly fine. Its been in my rig for 3 months now, too soon to tell the quality of it. I ordered many Denso replacement parts from RockAuto, so far so good. Oldest being my Denso Radiator, 2.5 years now, no leaks.

Your alternator is being 'nice' and forewarning you. Exactly what mine did.

Because of it's location...it is not a fun part to replace (whether pulled from top or bottom). You might shop that price a bit...but it doesn't sound out of line (more if the one bolt breaks off).

probably not worth the risk to end up with non-oem reman.

I decide to order the Denso alternator from Denso's website. Thinking I will tackle this project this weekend. Seams like taking out the radiator is the simplest way even though it may take a little longer. Can someone point me in the right direction for how to do this?
