Alternator - OEM or aftermarket??

I decide to order the Denso alternator from Denso's website. Thinking I will tackle this project this weekend. Seams like taking out the radiator is the simplest way even though it may take a little longer. Can someone point me in the right direction for how to do this?

The alternator will come out the bottom (past the lower radiator hose) with a little turning and pulling. I wouldn't remove the radiator or lower hose. Same thing going back in with the new one. I've pulled and installed them from the top and bottom and both ways seemed equally troublesome (to me), just for different reasons. It's all a tight fit regardless of how you go about it.

I'd advise that you have the correct harness connector for your year model alternator (in hand) before you start...since it is common for these to crumble when disconnecting them. IF it doesn't great, but assume that it WILL. Also, slowly and carefully remove the bottom mounting bolt. More than a few folks have twisted it off in the housing and then the real fun begins.

The radiator doesn't need to come out as @flintknapper said. If you absolutely need more space, pull the battery and tray.

Thanks for the tips. I looked on Rockauto for the connector but didn't see it in the list. Where is best place to get one of those?

You'll want to look on your alternator and see if the connector is an oval 3 wire ( I believe it will be) or a rectangular 4 wire.

If oval 3 wire then this should be your part:

Ha, nevermind on this. I thought I was on the 80s forum... Radiator still doesn't need to come out though.

I was able to order the connector from my local Toyota dealer yesterday. Got a call this morning that it's in and ready for pick-up.

Got my connector and alternator. Started on replacement. All is going fairly well. Even my original connector is not brittle. However. I did brake the little plastic cover that snaps on over my main charging wire to the point it won't stay on anymore. The one that covers the little 10mm nut. Is this critical to cover with something?

It just prevents that lug from grounding out if anything metal on the vehicle (that was grounded) should come in contact with it. Not likely to happen but that circuit goes directly to your battery so it would melt down in a hurry if it did occur.

Ya. That's pretty much what I figured. I was able to put a zip tie on it and get it to hold in place pretty well.

Got it done. Woohoo! Took about 3 hrs. Could probably do it in 1/2 that next time. I think 1/2 that time was spent looking for various tools that I set down and then couldn't find. I know at one point I spent 10 minutes looking for my trouble light. Turned out to be right in front of me the whole time. I'm pretty bad about that sort of thing. Drives me nuts. Doesn't help that my garage bench is a mess. Anyway got it done with the help of mud. I love this forum. Saved $300 bucks today and I got more familiar with our Cruiser. Which is always a good thing.

Anyone gone to the trouble of changing the bearings on one? I'm planning to get the Denso reman from Rock Auto, but I might just order these bearings and swap them out/clean up my original and keep it on hand rather than turning in the core. Mine works fine, but the bearing squeal is rendering it near undriveable.

If ya have time, I could tell you a long story about how I've ultimately determined this to be yet another, of probably 4 bearing problems my engine's front end has plagued me with for the past 2.5 years. One by one, I'd locate and replace one (OEM PS pump being the most recent, at $425 or so...), only to have yet another one go out shortly therefter. At this rate my A/C will probably be next. Anyhoo... The bearings...?

Great recommendations from everyone! I was looking for a Denso reman, when it occurred to me I first ought to see what 'MUD was saying about alternators....now I know.

Just to be clear, the 27060-50260-84 alternator assembly comes WITH a pulley and voltage regulator, and not just a central charging assembly, correct? I don't expect it to come with the mounting bolt shown as #4, but like with the Denso, I would want it to come with everything else. Can anyone advise me on that please?

Thanks!

all the rebuilt densos come with the reg and pulley.
bearings, regulators, brushes and brush holders are pretty cheap. there's a link somewhere where I bough a kit sort of.

I'd have a look inside at everything before I mounted it up if fresh out of the amazon box.
oo slip ring also- isn't that what they call it? that runs between the bushes?

I don't know if you were responding to my question, but what I'm looking for is to find out whether the Toyota alternator (27060-50260-84), not the Denso, comes as a ready-to-install assembly?

yes I'm sure it does. if its a toyota part and it says assembly it almost has to.

FWIW, got just two years out of an alternator I got from Autozone. Two years almost to the day before it bit the bullet. Thankfully my rig died in the parking lot at work. As much fun as it is to impress my coworkers that I can repair my Lexus in the lot, I don’t want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere Montana if it goes out again. So this time I ponied up for one from the dealer.

Last month on a trip to Colorado a friend's alternator in his 2000 LX went out. It was an aftermarket that had only been in for 8 months.
