Very nice rig!!:flipoff2: I too am beginning my FJ adventure down in Eugene with a recent purchase of a 65 FJ40, though not mint...

nice rig ,i like the job done on the second fuel tank filler

You have probably read this before but like I was talking in the origional posting the "Doctor" who bought it had this all done before he even got it. The gas tank, 3 speed on the floor and the removal of the 1969 smog crap was done before he drove it. He went back to the 1968 configuration on the engine set up.

PS: I am definitely getting a soft top, orders are on hold and I am waiting for them to make the bows. Does anyone know if "all" FJ's are able to accept them?

Sweet Rig! Just moved back to the Lower 48. Glad to see fellow Alaskans on Mud.

Welcome, and NICE rig! I've got a '68 but she sure is not in the same condition as yours. I don't know what type of wheeling you intend to do, but it would be real sad to see such a beauty get dented, scratched and otherwise damaged from the hardships of true four wheeling. Maybe keep this sweet ride stock and protected and buy yourself a more 'beater' type cruiser for your off road forays. Just my 2 cents. My 40 was almost in mint condition when I finished restoring and painting her, wished now that I had left her that way and wheeled something else. Like everyone has said, do as you see fit with your cruiser. If you decide to wheel her, do get your body seams sealed up, something I didn't do, and now after 15 years of use in the NW and AK, I'm paying the price. As far as the vacuum 4 wheel shift and dash hi/lo shifter, the vacuum operated perfectly for the first 10 years, and then the age of the rubber diaphram began to show with slow actuation and the such, hi/lo linkage became VERY sloppy as there are so many links. Stripped it all off and converted to a floor 4/hi/lo shifter. No worries now! Have fun with your new beauty.

If you mean a factory soft top/replica, then you should have the means to put one on without too much work. (definitely keep your hard top and doors!)

Look at the rear of the tub inside and you should find some bolts along the inside corners below where the hard top sits. Also, there should be holes/captive nuts in the floor just below on the tops of the wheel wells. These are all to mount the rear bows. I didn't see any footman loops on your tub in the pics, so you'll have to do some drilling to mount those up. Should be a few on the rear lower doors too. When you remove the hard top, there should be holes along the upper lip of the tub that twistlocks fit into to hold the sides of the soft top. If you don't have these holes, you'll have to drill these too. Because your 40 was repainted, they may have removed the footman loops and filled all the holes (?)

Congratulations on an awesome rig! Awesome wife too!!

Man I'm glad you didn'y find that sweet Cruiser up here. I would have to be jealous.

Maybe I will barge her up and take a spin around your neighborhood. My family lives down the road from you on China hot springs road. I usually spend some time there now and then.

I hope to snap a few better pix this weekend and I will post them up. Best of luck with your new ride!

Nice find Robert. Is that a factory color? Is that Judson green?I have a 7/69, and would love to see some interior , and under hood shots of your cruiser of the same vintage, for reference. I found an OEM soft top frame with a Kayline top , and it fits fine. Marksoffroad built me a nice carb, with a non USA distributor, which has been a nice set up over stock. Lots of great info, and willingness to share information here. Good luck with your project!:cheers:Brendon.

I am sad to say that I will not be able to get any more photos for awhile (In Alaska working) Here are a couple of shots of the interior though. This was actually repainted forest green the factory color was Pea Green. I was a little bummed to find out it was painted though they did a professional job it would have been nice in its original state. 35 years in a garage couldn't have looked that bad :frown:. When I get back down to Oregon I will get some better shots for you. Its 98% original so I can get you some pics later on.

Thanks! I appreciate the response. Iam looking for a photo of the top of the valve cover showing the "Toyota Improved Combustion" decal so that I can have one produced. Brendon

That is a beautiful 40. The condition of everything is amazing. I want your steering wheel. :)

When you are back in Oregon, drive it down to Metal-Tech. They are just a few miles down the road from the hangar and could give you some great ideas for protection. Come to a Cascade Cruisers meeting, too! Quite a few members are into restorations and would love to see yours.

Not sure how your vacuum 4wd setup is done. Looks like the handle is missing or yours is the next version that has a handle hanging down below the dash? Usual setup is a handle near the ash tray to select hi/low, and a pull knob located in the dash left of the handle to engage 4wd.

Spector's diagrams: Specter Off-Road-Land Cruiser Parts - Page 072-Vacuum Transfer Shift Assembly

If you do get OME, get the light version. OME tends to be better with heavy loads, which is what they originally were designed to handle.

Congrats!

I should be back down in Oregon in a month or two it would be fun to drive her over Metal-Tech and bounce some ideas off them. Would love to do a Cruiser run with the wife on the next club outing.

Great rig - clean and nice. The green is one of my favorite colors on a 40. With a mild lift and 33's, that will be a kind looking truck. You might want to consider a mini-truck power steering setup so the wife doesn't struggle too much turning the wheels - relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Look in the FAQ's for more info on that one. This is just me, but I like relatively stock 40's also. If you add a lift, just save the old springs/shocks/etc in case you want to reinstall or in case you sell and the buyer wants "all stock" equipment. My 2 cents....

to nice!

due to the rarity of that fj you might want to eep it as stock as possible and just get another one and do it up for 4x4 ? it will pay off later on, good luck and great find! i bought mine new in 1980 and been working on it ever since,it become a real sickness ,i may need counsilling?
