Im not much of a programmer. But after reading this thread it does look like its possible to retrofit on a 80.

transporting orphan children who just got free puppies.

this was dated back in 09 so we could definitely get the better lasers. It's cool to see that it's possible.

why would you even want that? I realize that I may be the old man in this conversation shaking my fists at the clouds angrily, but all the adaptive cruse, forward cameras, blind spot and whatever else garbage that can get crammed in the car just suck. maybe im biased as I usually have to fix it but its not always reliable, expensive to fix and while listed as a safety feature it dosnt make you any safer, just lazier and more reliant on the car to do the work for you.

and theres always that liability issue if and when something happens so why risk that

It would be kinda cool for a "highway cruiser" Cruiser. In my world it would just be that much more delicate electronics that needed to be kept working in a high vibration, high dust, high water, widely varying temperature environment... for very little use under the conditions where it would actually be useful to me. Yep, cool stuff for the market it is aimed at. Not for an '80 that earns it's money the old fashioned way.

Besides, generally speaking, if the guy in front of me is slowing down, I do not want to slow down and stay behind him anyway. I want to go around him and get with it. ;)

Mark...

I would love one. Used it all the time in the 200. I hear the newest LX570 works in stop and go traffic. Most excellent.

Would not trust aftermarket no matter who made it puzzle piecing an archaic throttle cable pedal to a bunch of new age tech sensors. No point in having one without trusting the system 101% put together by super smart folks like those engineers at Toyota.

I’ll settle for my 23 year old and cantankerous cruise control.

Hahaha. No your point makes sense. I have this on my 19 Lexus UX and it is amazing on long trips or rush hour traffic. It has also saved me a couple of times from unsafe drivers who like to brake fast and at this point they are very reliable. As far as cost goes, they're not too expensive, relatively speaking ($3000) considering how expensive our bumpers are and other stuff we put on our rigs some may see this as a benefit.

Hate the adaptive on our work tundra, tried to use it last road trip and I couldn't stand it. The thing I loved about my 80 the most was taking it for a drive. I don't need the ride driving me around.

I would rather figure out how to have blind spot indicators for all the dummies driving in my blind spot.

Blind spot indicators if I recall would be extremely cheap and simple to install. Its been a while since Ive researched it. If I recall less than 100 bucks.

The 80 series is a nice durable clean slate that people add all kinds of stuff to. I get that its not for everyone, but if someone is familiar with programming devices it could be a fun project that I was just bringing attention to. If someone was hacker savvy enough, they probably could combine the 80 abs with cruise control and adapt the newer crawl control feature that is on toyota 4x4s.

Their are also backup sensor kits...

Yep, I have looked into it as well. Lots of options out there, but not many with stellar reviews. I'd really like it to look oem so that is the big holdup for me right now.

Exactly. If we can get the kit from Toyota/Lexus I'd be all about adding this.

Hmm I was just thinking about this kind of stuff today. I am getting older (41) and I used to love all the tech and gadgets when I was younger but now I mostly drive a 1996 80 series and a 2006 LS. I have been thinking about buying something new but I always keep coming back to these models are kind of the sweet spot between comfort and not having a bunch of crap to go wrong.

you can turn this stuff off/on but I can guarantee that you will love the blind spot and park assist. The adaptive radar cruise is a hit or miss for people. But the automatic crash detection is an all around liked feature. It has saved a lot of people, whether it be bodily injury and/or car damage.

Oh I am not saying it isn't nice. And I have had cars and trucks with it. I am just saying I would prefer to not have it given that it is just something more to die. I have become one of those curmudgeons that would like a 200 series, with cloth, no nav, and no electronics. lol.

Hahaha no I understood what you were saying. I'm the same way except I spontaneously go for the new stuff, even though in the back of my mind I know it's something else that can break, but with the expectation of probably not fixing it if it breaks out of warranty lol. From personal experience though, almost 5 years with this technology, I haven't run into any issues *knock on wood
