1997 FZJ80 Cruise Control - Getting Started (1 Viewer)

The LC is a 1997 FZJ80 with 250k miles. For the last several years the cruise control has been acting more and more strangely. The symptoms have become:
1. It is temperature sensitvie. It works well when first started. When warm the on/off switch becomes intermittant.
2. The on/off switch is steering wheel position sensitive. If it does not turn on then sometimes if I turn the wheel the switch will work.
3. When it does work it has become reactive to the turn signal. If I use the turn signal to change lanes the cruise will disengage.
4. Sometimes when I try to engage the on / off button the green 'cruise' light will flash.
5. The set and accel controls are intermittant.
I am at a loss as to how to even start? Is there a general 'start here' howto somewhere?
Are these symptoms of a wireing fault in the steering column?
Where is the relay physically located?

The usual suspects are the steering column mounted switch and the controller module.

There is an extensive troubleshooting guide in the service manual. If you don't already have one, you can download one for free from the Resources forum, 80 series section, for your model year.

3. Do you have LEDs as rear lights. It disengage the CC with turn signal because it ‘thinks’ you hit the brake. There is probably very little current flowing between them. The way you check is disconnect the connectors of the rear lights and see if it works.
