If you had an abundance of 70 series parts laying around and you decided to build a rig; would you choose the new or older style front end?? Both are considered 79 series Land Cruisers.

Depends on the build , for the pickup and Troopy I like the new style , swb and mwb I prefer the old narrow nose.

Are you sure the top photo isn’t a 75?

Close to 2000 when they added coil spring front suspension to the 75 series model they changed the designation to 79 series, at least in South Africa. So you could buy a factory 79 series with the older front clip and round headlights.

Didn't coil springs happen in 96 and that's when it went to the 79 designation? Then the wide nose in 2007? Maybe some markets lingered for a while with different configurations.

1999 is when coil spring front started. And ya 2007 for wide nose.

Cheers

Right....I thought 96 looked weird when I typed it. I moved my 96 80 around today...maybe that's why I had 96 on my brain. Ha.

The narrow nose makes more sense to me because it has better visibility. But the wide nose is not something you see everyday in the US. I've thought deeply about building a wide nose 73/74 simply because Toyota never did.

The wide nose is very cool for exactly the reason Hoser said...they're not something you see here ever. People don't believe me when I tell them it's a Land Cruiser. But the old school narrow nose front end is very classic....I was going to do a conversion on the Troopy but I think I'll stick with the narrow. Looks primitive....evolution of the iconic 40 with those separate fenders.

Heck, even the 75 Series Ute isn't something you see very often in the U.S. :)

Heck, now I've got to Google "specificity".
