So, my gear box is starting to leak pretty bad. And groan. Also, I think this might be the root of the clunk CD @ceylonfj40nut couldn’t hear.

Looking at options and I’ll welcome your opinions please.

Keeping 60 series box

In no particular order:
A) send to Read Head for a rebuild, $534 plus tax and shipping ($650?) and a couple weeks down.

B) rebuild kit from Toyota (on sale, $125 to my door) head down to Jimmy’s @CenTXFJ60 and benefit from his experience.

C) buy from Georg @orangefj45 ($700-$800? He’s in Moab until Monday) swap out.

80 series box

D) reman oe from Napa at about $600

E) anyone have a line on an 80 box?

I did B and it's working out great. I think I found a kit in Australia from a cruiser shop that was less than what Mr. T sells it for but then shipping takes longer. Process is not bad at all especially if you have someone else assisting. The big O ring reinsertion in the body isn't hard if you go slow and use a blunt plastic something to hold it down as you guide it back past the sharp bit in the housing. Lucky for you the the 62 pump is way better than the 60, my rebuild is holding up just fine after converting to Saginaw.

Hardest part for me was the sector shaft seal and getting it to sit flat when reinserting. Here's my writeup for your entertainment. Good luck!

@majdomo are these wheels the aluminum Enkai ones?

If so, I'm still rocking the same on my 40.

No unf - they are cheap a$$ Chinesium knockoffs. I only still have them because my son likes the period-correct 80s look and I am too cheap to buy stockers lol

Good pic of your rig btw. Looks all boss and stuff out doing things!

Appreciate it. That was on the way to SAS8 in Animas Forks with @OlYellr and @Plains Cruiser

The traction boards were there to act as a wind/rain break and also so Gabe @mesa man could get excited about something.

Threw those wheels and tires on the 62 last year for the trip to SAS9 as they are slightly bigger than what I have on there.

Great pic!! SAS and GSMTR and Mid-America '02 Fest (BMW event in Arkansas)... life goals! I'm just fn far from all of it here in CA.

Yeah but you have the great state of California (I’m a native of NorCal) to explore and Rubithon! Plus, loads of folks make the trek.

Dove in to the drivers side hinge replacement, again. The previous set were Taiwanese knockoffs that were racked out of shape. I’d installed them anyway with some nylon washers to compensate for the poor build. Less than ideal.

I eventually sourced a solid used set from around the here Mud parts.

Two take aways from this project:
1) anyone who says they can get that fender off in 15 minutes is lying.
2) I found where the two bolts I had left over from the last time were supposed to go.

Door closes much better.

Power steering gearbox rebuild New
Right of passage badge please…

I rebuilt my power steering gear box and while I don’t have a ton of faith in the rebuild, it is back on and not leaking. Steering feels tighter and I’m pretty sure the mystery clunk that @ceylonfj40nut couldn’t feel is gone.

Ran into several snags, both literal and figurative, leading me to believe I ruined this box.

I used a phone a friend and phoned a friend who managed to locate a box for me through another friend. However, while waiting for that friend of a friend to come through (hasn’t yet 😢) I decided to give it another shot.

Managed to get it back together, on the truck, bled and “working” for now.

I know there is a torn seal in there and will send it in as soon as I return from this next trip in a week or so.

I see you also have the other tool that makes working on old Landcruisers great in the 12oz version.😉
As useful as a pocket knife and tastes better.

No pictures but the worst part of this build was putting the loose ball bearings back in. Getting the pitman arm off was less annoying and still sucked.
