Don't forget, some of the trails around Taylor Park/BV require a Colorado OHV permit. I've always had one with me, but not displayed, and have never been asked about it. The non resident permits are super easy to get from CO Parks and Wildlife.

True on that. If you're bringing a side-by-side or ATV, you'll definitely need a permit in the areas above BV and Taylor Park.

Absolutely. Even if your rig is licensed and plated, some of the trails across CO require an OHV permit. Several in the Taylor Park area are on the list 👍 Just wanting to pass along the info for folks who plan to explore before or after HIH.

Another great opportunity for HIH9 participants has been announced via email blast. @Outer Limit Supply has extended us an offer to get professional first aid training via online and in person (at HIH9) interaction. Additionally, the code will give you a discount off of the normal pricing. @paflytyer and I have seen some tough situations on the trails and highly recommend this type of training. I know we have a lot of families in this group and being trained on correct methods will benefit both on the trails and at home.

Thanks @Outer Limit Supply for this extra benefit.

So the San Juan's got A LOT of snow this year, like 176% of normal as per the Denver Post. I know things can/will change rapidly if there's an intense warming trend but is anyone else concerned about the possibility that some/most of the trails we plan to run might be impassable? Just sayin'

This is a concern in June, but generally no once we get to July. Check out the graph below taken from opensnow.com which gets it from NRCS. While we are actually expecting more snow in the mountains next week, what you can see is that we are getting ready for our big melt to start. There were some interesting stories this week about the snowpack "ripening". This refers to a time when there is melting, but the snowpack can still "sponge" up the water. Once it get saturated and we are warm (usually mid-May) the melt can be pretty steep. Of course I think if you went up at the end of June or beginning of July there might still be snow near the top of the passes, and I think you will be able to find snow pockets even when we are up there at the end of July. But by the end of July for HIH9 I would think it extremely unlikely that snow is causing passes to be impassible.

Nice. Opensnow.com is such a great reference. One thing's for sure, with all the water the wild flowers should be beautiful. Looking forward to it!

What he said. Not overly concerned about it with our dates being late July. If anything, it could be a muddy year.

When I ran Black Bear last year about a week before HIH that was one thing that I thought made that trail really amazing. I think we saw ~6 different colors of wildflowers

I'm needing to setup my CB antenna. I have a full length whip (102") already in the garage. Not sure about trees that would catch it on these trails or just mount with a spring and attach to the roof rack. Otherwise looking at buying a firestik. Any thoughts?

No trees to speak of. You'll be fine.

No trees at all. Imogene has a few, but they are zero issue. You'll be fine. I run a whip antenna on my bullbar and have never had a single issue even in forests. Firesticks need a spring because they are rigid. Whip antennas, well, whip...so they don't need springs.

In the past Stan has lead a few day trip from Denver down into Silverton. In many years past the Southern Cruisers have done a multi-day trip from the outskirts of CO slowly into Silverton. Are any small groups forming to do anything similar last year? We've been lucky enough to tag along on a few of these and they've been highlights of the trip.
the #southerncruisers are doing a Sunday overnighter coming from Sante Fe, then day trips from Silverton this year before HIH starts. Little different pace than usual. We'll post up when we figure out routes.

102" is pretty huge, I would opt for 4ft max. Maybe consider HAM in the future if you need better coms? I'll be running vhf/uhf with a 32" antenna on this trip as well as my CB with a 48" firestik. The CB really just isn't very effective unless you are car to car and even then, the clarity is pretty poor.

Trail signups must be imminent because Trail Leaders just got their tentative assignments! Looking forward to Hundreds in the Snow or Hundreds in the MUD this year.

Thinking about mud.... :bang:.... future me hates mud

What's the deal with all the late July birthdays showing up to the same rally? I'm 7/31 and rarely meet people with a birthday close to mine. Here I thought HIH was just my special birthday present.

Thats funny my birthday is Thursday the 25th!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO close to trail selections and swag shop opening up for HIH9. An email will be sent prior to set you up for success. @paflytyer are pretty stoked about the way it's all coming together.

Awesome! Do you know about what time the opening night meet up is on Wednesday?

Hopefully not this weekend as I'll be "remote" and unplugged for the holiday weekend. No Internet or cell where I'm going :)
