Wow! You're definitely equipped for the long haul! Traveling in maximum comfort.

Not sure we can have the Hundy ready from the frame-off resto and also missed the registration for HIH9 (doh!) but will be in the area to drop our daughters off at summer camp in Buena Vista, CO. Will stop in to see the Silverton meetup and your rigs if y’all don’t mind?

I'll be in Salida the Sunday prior (leaving that Saturday morning from Austin) and going up thru BV to do TinCup Pass and a few others in the area and come back down to Salida to camp before heading over to Silverton via numerous gravel backcountry roads.

When you're in BV, eat at House Rock Kitchen. Best food I've had almost anywhere (Austin included). I'm assuming your daughter is going to Frontier Ranch?

In the past Stan has lead a few day trip from Denver down into Silverton. In many years past the Southern Cruisers have done a multi-day trip from the outskirts of CO slowly into Silverton. Are any small groups forming to do anything similar last year? We've been lucky enough to tag along on a few of these and they've been highlights of the trip.

Both of our daughters will be attending Adventures Unlimited for two weeks. We drop them off on the 22nd. It’s Isobels 3rd year and Jeans first. It is the reason we (nay, I) picked up the hundy. Need a capable and well behaved 4x4 so that my girls would want to make the 1000 mile trip with me each year. It was through this forum i learned by lurking all of y’alls knowledge about the Landcruiser and also way back from Christo. He had told me how awesome the LC’s were. I had no idea at the time.

Anyway, the girls will attend this camp each summer for the next few years. A lot of adventures await us :)

I'm certainly interested, I'll be leaving the Silverthorne area Saturday and making the trek down to Silverton. My current route is actually over TinCup and then down to spend a night in Black Canyon of the Gunnison. I really want to visit that park, but otherwise I'm not locked into any particular route.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will check out House Rock Kitchen! @geanes Any reason you would advise against hauling a M101 trailer over TinCup? I was planning to setup camp by Mirror Lake and do some exploring.

Awesome! I spend about 1.5 months/year in CO. Primarily running around the Salida/BV area. If you need any maps, camping spot or off-road suggestions, let me know. Happy to share. If you time it right, I'd suggest doing Medano Pass which drops you into Great Sand Dunes National Park (amazing sight to see). From there, it's a straight shot up to BV via Poncha Springs/Salida. I generally leave Austin around 6pm (I get to miss all that TX panhandle "scenery") and arrive at the foot of Medano Pass around 9:00am.

Thx for the offer. I’ll ping you when I’m up there.

Tincup can be very ROUGH....especially on the western slope just over the pass. Be prepared to take it incredibly slow. If you don't have trailer brakes, I wouldn't drag a trailer over Tincup. Below are a few photos. Keep in mind, photos don't do it justice. Tincup is rougher IMO than anything we do at HIH (Poughkeepsie is the exception). With the amount of snow they've had up there this year, there will be a LOT of runoff which can lead to deeper ruts. It's certainly do-able with a trailer if your patient, take your time and pick your lines well.

Tincup itself is a great little mountain village. Eat at Frenchie's (INCREDIBLE burgers). From there, you can shoot down to Taylor Reservoir which is amazing to see. Come back up to Tincup and then cross over Cumberland Pass (easy) to Pitkin and then down onto 50 which takes you towards Gunnison and Montrose.

If you're set on camping at Mirror Lake (amazing place BTW), an alternative to Tincup pass (if you're not comfortable dragging a trailer over rocks) would be to head down to Salida and go over Old Monarch Pass, Black Sage Pass and Waunita Pass to Pitkin (all those passes are EASY and SCENIC). From there, you'd head north over Cumberland Pass to Tincup and then east up to Mirror Lake. I've got GPX files and Gaia maps if you need them.

It is doubtful that Cottonwood Pass will be open. They've been paving it for the past 2 summers. It connects BV to Taylor Reservoir.

@westwardCruiser This should lend some aerial perspective to the passes around BV/Salida. Taylor Reservoir (photo below) is at the top left (barely visible). It's an AMAZING high mountain lake with a great marina that has excellent hot-dogs and LOTS of hummingbirds everywhere!

Don't forget, some of the trails around Taylor Park/BV require a Colorado OHV permit. I've always had one with me, but not displayed, and have never been asked about it. The non resident permits are super easy to get from CO Parks and Wildlife.
