Good to see Zuk is still doing these in his spare time. Rumors are he moved and retired from doing 3rds.
Oh this thread is at top of the watch list now. Great read and information as I begin my search for an 80 to add to the stable.

Ha! 37 is the new 35! I didn’t open my diffs up. Even though I should have. But I want to get on the road and see how the 4L80 and Toyota gearing does with 35s. So I need to get it on the road first.

Anyway, here it is:
“As mentioned earlier the ring and pinions have both been super polished so no 500 mile breaking... Just get in and drive balls to the wall if you want
The gears will not heat up.. they will stay cool....
and if you decide to drain the oil at 500 miles, you should notice no debri in the oil the oil should be like brand new .....as long as the axle housing was properly cleaned of course
Got the rear third on the bench and now disassembly begins
529 ring gear and new carrier bearings go on first
New carrier bearings pressed on and super polished 4.88 ring is torqued to the factory 81 foot pounds on all 12 nuts and bolts
And now on to the pinion end of things
I can tell this nut has never been unstaked so these are the factory bearings with the factory pinion seal and they are still turning smoothly although they are worn out they are still turning smoothly and that says a lot about the quality of factory bearings
The factory seal is the metal version and has held up 30 years so far so I am going to use the same exact seal later in this build.

Here is something very important I discovered.. the aftermarket pinion bearings are a disaster waiting to happen the problem is those aftermarket pinion bearings usually have very steep angled rollers.. they are almost vertical rollers and that means the ratio of radial load versus axial load is basically unbalanced and maybe a year down the road or two the bearings mysteriously seem to loosen up.
You see in the picture three outer small pinion bearings the one on the left with the color coordinated black support cage is the old factory quality bearing and that has lasted a couple hundred thousand miles with no issues
The middle bearing is the one I am going to use in your build Angelo and it is the factory bearing basically from the dealership and has the same angle on the rollers as the bearing on the left.
On the right is the aftermarket supplied outer bearing and those have almost vertical rollers and lead to problems later on.
Probably out of all the aftermarket suppliers a bearing kits for Land cruisers, perhaps the only one that supplies the right bearings (correct angular rollers) would be SOR.com
And I can go on for pages and pages about the benefits of having the aftermarket ring and pinions properly finished.....
ring and pinions supplied in the aftermarket are generally only 90% complete.. I call them "rough" ring and pinions...
They come with instructions and say to break them in easy.. 500 miles of slow driving making sure to not let them overheat and changing the oil after 500 miles.
Things seem to go wrong 30% of the time and the ring gear teeth seem to get hotter than they should and as a result sometime later down the road the tooth breaks off and they blame the gear installer
The ring and pinions you have here Angelo are REM super polished.. no break in ...just get in and drive like hell.. drive it like you rented it.. you can even tow right from the get-go.... Enough said.
Your old pinion flange has only .001 inch of runout and this is very good
High speed wire brush on the gasket surface .....now everything's super smooth with no rough edges.
now ready to put in the factory pinion bearings.

I’m not familiar with this member, does he still take work, drop off only? I was looking at ecgs, they seem to do phenomenal work as well.

Wow! Impressive for sure. Looking at that type of documentation and experience required all but gurantees I will most definitely not doing this at home.
