I have a 86 4Runner that wont start first time... once its been started itll start fine and run perfectly.

The only way to start it is to use 'start ya bastard' spray or tow start.

when the key is turned on first notch it clicks behind the glovebox, then when i try start it; it'll turn over but wont start.

Is it something to do with the glow plugs along the line or a diesel leak in the line??

I have replaced the battery, glow plugs, air filter, cleaned the air intake pipe and adjusted the revs...

Anyone know what it could be??

Well, most folks here run petrol engines. You might get an answer from our few diesel folks, but you might get a better response by posting your question in the Diesel Tech forum.

so it turns over, right. and by spray you mean starting fluid?

you know you can seriously damage your diesel when you use starting fluid.
the label says not for use in diesel engines

I don't know much about diesel Toy engines as they are few and far between here in the states but if it restarts when hot then it would have to be glow plug related. If you replaced them then the glow plugs themselves shouldn't be the problem. There should be a way to test to see if power is getting to the glow plugs. Thats where I would start.

That definitely sounds like a glow plug problem.

Have you tried cycling them repeatedly before cranking? Are you getting voltage to the GPs?

On the 2LT-E (you have a 2LT, or is it 2LII-T?) the ECU doubles as GP controller, it could very well be the GP timer from the sounds of it. Easiest way around that is to wire up a wilson switch to isolate everything but the GPs (which you said you replaced--did you put in the correct voltage ones?)

The issue is most likely air getting into the system.
Once you have the Engine running, have someone hold the Throttle at like 4,100RPM then you can look over the fuel lines, there is probable a fracture in a metel fuel line somewhere.

Starter Fluid is widely used 'ere in Diesels.
Mine was sprayed with a s*** load when it had done just 350km. A week later, when I got the Car home, I noticed Air Filter was covered in corrosion. https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/101543-2l-wouldnt-fire-all.html Nearly two years ago and the Engine is still farked.

(Sorry didnt realise this was the wrong forum as im new to this site =P )

Not necessarily the wrong forum. This is one of those cases where both are appropriate, but one might be better than another. We do get some Ozzy folks here that run diesel mini's. And then there is Dan. :grinpimp:

Hey guys so i found the problem...
Turns out it was the glow plugs- when i changed them a washer dropped off so a wire was earthing out on the engine when it was meant to be earthing out in the glow plug thingy.

now it runs perfectly n starts no problemo.

Thanks for all your help guys! ta =)

Hah! Knew it was the glow plugs. Now pictures are demanded. It's the law.

Good you figured it out.

And by the way, I double checked my can of staring fluid, and in big bold letters it says Do not use in diesel engines.

Yeah, you really don't want to use gasoline starting fluid in a diesel. But Ether is an acceptable way to start a diesel (also sold in aerosol cans), as long as the glow plugs are completely dead (and by dead I mean deactivated).
