I came across what seems to be a really good deal on a local FJ60. Its got the right lift, wheels/tires, interior has been redone, 5 speed upgrade, rebuilt motor, no rust, etc. It seems to be a great truck for the price.

Here is the issue;
The current owner has totally de-smogged it, installed a GM throttle body fuel injection system on it and an HEI ignition system. Obviously it runs great (albeit a little on the rich side), but as a resident of the great state of california, it needs to have that equipment in order to register it.

Here are the questions;
•*How difficult is it to "re-smog" a mid 80s FJ60?
•*Has anyone ever done this?
•*Does anyone have the smog equipment that they have pulled of of their 60 that they want to sell? From what I can tell the only thing that I wouldn't need is the air injection rail.
•*What would a fair price for all that equipment be?
•*Does anyone know anything about the GM fuel injection conversions for toyota?
•*How difficult do you think it would be to pull out the FI and return it to a carb set up?

I think thats it for now. Any thoughts, questions, answers are EXTREMELY helpful and MUCH appreciated.

I'm in the process of doing the opposite. I'd be curious to see how exactly yours is set up. Can you post a bunch of pictures up here (or somewhere)?

I will probably keep the parts around for a few weeks to make sure I haven't screwed mine up, but won't need it otherwise. You're welcome to it; we can chat over PM to figure it all out. Good that you won't need the air rail--only one of the ports came off as needed, the others are royally screwed.

Thanks saucebox. I dont own the rig yet so I dont have pics. Im obviously a little nervous about what its going to take to get it all CA legal again.

In the mean time tho there are some really good step by step threads on the desmog process here. I suppose all I need to do is reverse the process, I guess Im mostly worried about removing the FI system and getting my hands on all the needed equipment.

I just sold a complete set of smog stuff from a '85 for ~200. Maybe it might cost more depending on how desperate you are.'

There have been a bunch of FJ-60's in the C4C program - check in the "Parting Out" section.

I'd be careful on this one - the rules in CA (I believe) say that if the Smog Equipment breaks, you have limits on what you have to spend, but if the smog system is not originanal - no amount of money is too much to bring the truck to original standards.

I had a "partially desmogged" FJ-40 in CA, and every year it was a big nightmare getting through the smog process. You always worry you'll get tagged as a "Gross Polluter" and get extra scruitiny of your truck.....

Why is this guy selling, andyway?

OBTW: In CA, isn't it the current owner's responsibility to pass smog testing as a part of the transaction? (Although if you hold him to this, he won't sell it to you....)

He is selling it because it was a project truck between he and his son and it seems like one or both of them lost interest. Its been sitting for the better part of a year. In addition I think he is selling it specifically because of the smog issue. I got the feeling that he had a smog cert hookup that no longer exists.

And, you are right about smog cert being the sellers responsibility. Which is why he is "selling it as a parts vehicle". Which is fine. Im not afraid of the work, I just want to know whats involved as far as cost and effort. My plan would be to non-op it immediately and get it all ship shape before I even took it to the smog ref.

Thanks for the info on the smog equip. When you sold it off, did that include the smog pump? Or did you de-vane yours and use it as an idler?

Thanks again Rocky_LC

I just desmogged mine but not sure what you want or can use....

1- smog pump....needs new bearing but fins are good and works great otherwise
2- air rail and inserts all good except last one over #6 cylinder would need to be re-brazed together as tube came off during desmog that connects fitting to rail itself
3- HAC and everything else is yours if needed. I kept a couple items but most are not available anywhere and no longer carried by Toyota such as HAC.

I have pics of what I took off that you are welcome to if you pay the shipping. Surely you can find some parts closer to you though as not sure the cost of shipping would be worth it for the big parts.

Register out of state... done. BTW just kidding, that's illegal.

I would pass on it to save yourself a huge headache.... JMHO

Well, as a fellow Angeleno, I am all too familiar with smog equipment.

If he has the old parts, and hasn't buggered too much, sure, you can do it... If you have to buy them, you can probably get them used, here, for around $300 give or take.

If you need an OEM dissy, add $100.

Where in L.A. are you?

Do you plan to do the re-smog yourself ?

Is this the one you're looking at?

Thanks guys!

dbleon, I thought about doing the out of state thing, just long enough to buy myself enough time to collect the parts and get it all working. But the fact that the reg on the vehicle is currently expired just makes it that much more difficult. Registering an out of state vehicle in any local state I have a usable address in (Or & Wa) requires a visual to make sure the vin matches. But as you said, thats illegal so I (obviously ) didnt give it that much thought.

Spike Strip, ya, thats the one. He has none of the parts that were removed (I think he had a shop do it all, including the fuel injection conversion). Although I think I could swing it with the HEI ignition, this is looking to be more hassle than it might be worth. I would however do all the work myself (I dont trust too many people to work on my cars). But I did briefly entertain the idea of just sending it to $OR.

Honestly if this was simply a resmog, I think I would tackle it. But the fact that it has a GM fuel injection system on it (that needs to be pulled to be compliant), the registration is past due AND it needs to be completely resmogged, I think it just might be too much.

The problem is, its got all the right gear. H55, 3" OME lift with anti-inversion hangars, lockers F/R, Longfields, HEI ignition and a rebuilt motor with 15k on it. On top of that the interior is pretty nice too, new headliner, new carpet kit, Explorer seats (electric drivers seat), a ton of maintenance related work and finally its got FLAIRS!! Its definitely worth what he's asking especially considering Im fairly certain he would come down a fair amount.

If I had another 60, I would probably get it in a heart beat and swap all this gear over.

Spike Strip, I'm kind of all over the place. I have an apartment in MDR, I work in Century City, my girlfriends house in Topnga, and I visit my parents in Agoura pretty often. Id be working on the rig in either Topanga or Agoura. Where are you at?

Either way, my goal is to have a rig within the next couple weeks, so I can do any needed maintenance and be ready to head to Overland Expo in AZ in mid April.

I'm in Encino ...

It's a nice truck, and if the price comes down enough, it would be worth it... But you're gonna need prolly a $1000 worth of parts... Int/exhaust combo -- CAT? Thermosensor... You can find it all used, here, maybe cheaper, but it may take some time, depending on how fast you want to spend the cash... Doubt you'd make the April deadline.

But you can look at it this way: the time you'd spend adding all the goodies that truck already has, is prolly more time than it would take to re-smog.

Any idea who did the motor rebuild ?

I'd call K&H (ask for Richard) in Canoga Park... Are you familiar with them? They're Land cruiser specialists. They've got a couple of donor rigs and might have what you need; and if you're thinking of having someone do the re-smog, they'd be the ones to do it. $OR as a last resort.

Mark Algazy, in Burbank, Marksoffroad.net is also a guru, but I think he's a bit busy right now .....

I've also got dupes of some of the more expensive smog items, but I tend to hang on to my stuff. :meh:

Thanks Spike!

Im staying in contact with the owner and trying to get a solid total on parts. Ideally, Im trying to see if I can source a full parts rig. Something I can pull of what I need and then either stash the rest, or part it out.

Im definitely planning on calling K&H tomorrow. Getting a price for an all in isnt a bad idea.

BTW, your rig is sweet! Nice job.

smog

there got to be a way to get that turck smog with the 350 u juat need all the smog stuff for a chevy 350 truck 88,89 if its tbi ? right ? would be lot cheaper then going back to a 2f . i am doing a swap and have alot of what u need cheep:D

I just went through the same process here in California on a rig that was missing many of the smog parts. I was able to piece together a combination of used and new parts to get it done but it was a pain! At the end of the day, the sniffer passed and I'm back to legal tags. Figure it'll cost you double what you budget in cash and time but it can be done. Ironically, my rig runs better now than before.

Spike,
A guy from here on MUD sent me a PM today. He has an intact parts rig in Pasadena. Im going to try and arrange checking it out this weekend. Although, his rig is an '87 and Im not sure if/what the difference in smog equipment might be. Any idea?

MrEd. The rig currently has the 2F. But its got GM HEI ignition and a GM fuel injection system retrofitted. And of course, no smog equipment. Whoever did the conversion did a pretty sano job on it. Hopefully it will come out as cleanly.

Devortex, thanks for the info. Thats really helpful.

No difference at all in smog parts. '87 would be a good year, hopefully fewer miles, and CA truck even better; The stuff is usually in better shape.

PM me about the rig... I've got a proposition for you :)
