Hurry up and finish already, slacker!! ;) BTW - RockDock left me a tail light I'm supposed to deliver to you at some point. Perhaps on the 17th of Nov when I see you out on the trail. Right??? :)

(P.S. I'm in 4 photo courses this fall so expect to see some more action over in the swamp donkey section)

Well... Maybe after. But, don't force me to beat you with it. ;)

Wow! Rescued from page 4! Didn't realize there was so much action in the diesel section.

Been working on tailgates for 45's but also got some work done on the 42. After a couple more coats of primer I got tired of sanding and just sprayed the color. I ended up buying a mid range set of HPLV guns and I sure like them. A little orange peel here and there but sure looks nice to me.

Yeah, and rust when it was unloaded in port LOL.

It's all good. I plan on doing a full frame off in five years or so. In the meantime she will be a semi-daily driver and stock wheeler. I'm actually more worried about coverage cuz the lighting was dim in the cab when I was spraying. If I opened the garage door it blocks the ceiling lights and lets the cold air in. I haven't seen in daylight yet.

A lot of progress has been made. I look back at the original photos and in the side shots the rust doesn't look that bad. Then I look at the shots of the tub with all the rust cut away. And now sprayed in 464 beige. Definite sense of accomplishment.

BUT, a lot still to go through. I have to patch the bottoms of all four doors. Weld and paint. And then both front floors cut/ patch/ weld/ paint. Rear wheel wells need undercoating sprayed in.

Then mechanical. The fan hub needs replacing/ fix. At least one front hub lock is stuck unlocked (hopefully). Front pinion leaks. Big leak in the tranny/ transfer region. Park brake seems to be one wheel only. Brake pedal is high and hard. Those are likely related.

All easy small projects with the possible exception of the tranny leak.

I also need to find four matching tires and possibly a windshield if the inspector insists.

I'll get there.

Are you patching stuff on wednesday evening?

Me and Richard and Ian started doing "cruiser night" on wednesdays where we get together on a wednesday every once in a while and help with someones projects/broken stuff.

Im familiar with mig welding sheet metal but interested to see your technique on welding sheet metal and doing bodywork, and looking at Ian and Richards rigs they oughta be as well. Ill see if they are interested but maybe sometime we can come by and see how the master does his work before he's all completed.

Looks terrible Kevin. Better send it to me so it does not bring down the calibre of your garage.:grinpimp:

My son has a few more weeks of Wed practice sessions that I drew the short straw for now that its chilly in the evenings. Deffinitly a good idea though. I'm going to bring the rear doors into the shop here tomorrow and see what I gotta bend up for patches. Tonight (after practice) I will likely try and reinstall the roll bar/ jumpseats/ marker lights etc. That will result in a few scratches in the soft 464 I'm sure. Or maybe I'll wait til friday.

Sooooo...... nope. Couldn't wait til friday.Tues night the paint was nice and hard so I installed the marker lights, roll bar and seats. No scratches. Wed night I did the emblems, jack bracket and rear reflectors.

Need all the tools!

A plea to all my local club members and all you hoarders out there. I would like to re-outfit this 42 with all of the original tools it came with. Now, I know the actual tool bag and contents will be expensive and a challenge to find. I'll work on them over time. but the jack, jack handle, jack bar, engine crank?......

Actually, lets back up the bus here a sec. What exactly should a 1981 BJ42 have come with? What am I actually looking for? I'd like the correct pieces if possible.

Livinginthepast! Lostmarbles! you guys watching this thread?

I have two sets. Sort of. I can send you pics...

I may be wrong, but you may be in luck since I think the 1981 FJ40 uses stuff that's more in common with the FJ60s (i.e. the brown stuff rather than the earlier yellow stuff). But an expert will chime in who knows.

My '83 FJ40 (US Spec), which I bought in 1990 from the original owner, had brown gear and no engine crank. The bag which held the goodies was that same beige vinyl with brown trim as the older ones, but the tools contained within were brown (with the exception of the lug wrench, which was two-piece and was galvanised).

My '84 FJ40 LX (Aus spec) also came with a brown jack and tools and also without an engine crank. My troopies have all come with the 'engine crank', as it is used to lower the spare.

I would suspect that the '81 would be similar to the '83-'84, as '81 was the big transition year to a more 'modern' 40 series (larger spring eyes, split transfer case, transmission mount, hand brake on teh rear axle, lighter valve springs on the 2F (not relevant to your BJ42, Obviously), introduction of the 3B/5 speed, etc).

Lostmarbles should chime in any minute here to agree or disagree with me (Tom?) as it is nearly noon in New Zealand.:grinpimp:

Thanks guys. Charla, pictures would be great just so I know what I'm looking for on flea-bay etc.
