Interesting read. I have offered the frame for my lid, but people generally don't want to pay a little extra for it.

Here's mine with the frame, it does look nicer and offer more strength since its 1/8" thick. For the folks whom purchased my lid prior, it's very easy to add the frame. Material is 2"X1.5"x1/8" aluminum angle, I used 45* mitter cut at the corners.

YEP!! This is how mine is set up now as well. Albeit I went this route because I initially cut out too much material from the tailgate leaving nothing for it rest on. Now I have a frame. Thanks socallove for stepping me through fixing my mistake!

Good thing about the frame is that I will most likely add an LED light to it, which turns on when I open the lid.

That said - I'll wait to see Reeves tailgate & decide from there. Now the thread is back on track.

Well you will be waiting a little longer... I got a quote back yesterday and rejected it. I had this sudden feeling of being raped as I read through the quote details and I just won't relay that to my clients.

They said they'd take another swing at it.

If the market is such that Kevin can not satisfy that market ( produce more) I really do not see the argument. Jason has stepped up with a different design of a COMMON mod for any tail gate and is looking to satisfy the market. Pretty straight forward.

I bought one from SoCal because he was doing the same. I can assure you that I will be buying from Jason to fulfill my own little market, in the future. He produces fine products. Holding out for unobtanium is just a luxury I can not afford, the product is nice, but not that nice that it can not be replaced.

Keep doing what you are doing Jason, thank you.

Kevin has taking the time in the past to break down his cost on both his flip out windows and tailgates because of people complaining about cost. Bottom line many people here do not want to pay the price for time required to R&D and make this kind of stuff. BTDT I feel for the guys that try to make a living doing this stuff.

As for tailgate access I use and live out my 80 and I would not buy anyone tailgate that one each side can open independent of each other and does not hinge at the back. These requirement are not as big of a deal if you do not use you 80 for travel.

I went as usually with a simple but low cost very user friendly effective system. In terms of durability and quality it cant be beat for $55. I stand on it with out concern every time I close my CampTeq. After a couple years its as good as the day I installed it.

I know this is a 8 year old post, but is anyone making these in 2024 ?. I don't see them on the TRAIL TAILOR web site, and it's been a while since I received a WagonGear email, and the website says nothing being shipped since 2022 due to material cost's and Kevins new job.
I have thought about a starboard custom door but they are 1/2" thick so trying to find a thinner option: Build Your Own - Starboard Boat Door - https://www.boatoutfitters.com/build-your-own-custom-starboard-boat-door
thanks

I have a NIB wagon Gear w/ all the fancy locks I never installed - I never even opened the package as shipped.

If you want to talk, I’m selling my 80 for down payment on property, otherwise my 80 & extras wouldn’t be on market at all.

Not out to profit- just what I paid & the brown truck ride.

PM me your text # if interested- I can send pics of it.

We’ll, at least a box that’s never been opened 😎

@Delta VS bought the rights to back bay customs version and added some improvements.

I like the Delta, but $950 is some coin.

I’m sure AL isn’t cheap (bought a 1/2” 2’x8’ & it was $300 2yrs back).

Seems LC’s are now becoming a ‘buy your bolt-in’s’ & less ‘home fab add-in’s’.

Looks nice though.

Hello Linus, thanks for the offer, but we just had some severe weather here and my basement was flooded and now I'm replacing a hot water tank that was new in Oct of last year, so the fun fund is being reassigned

No worries - I’m many projects behind & my 80 isn’t a priority to mod (most likely going to sell the 80 really) — buying raw land is a 50% down & I have plans to really focus on a custom house, so I’m sure it’ll still be around.
