Hi all! Ordered a new fuel tank off carparts.com for $300, guaranteed to fit my 1996. Mechanic says the part doesn’t fit as the opening doesn’t match the shape on the opening of the fuel pump. Has anyone seen anything similar? Was it just the wrong part sent (everything else fit)? Or is there something I need to consider? Before finding another tank, want to make sure I don’t make the same mistake.

Pics would be helpful.

80 series used the same tank 08/1992 to 01/1998

If the opening is different, it's the wrong tank.

Or made in Chyna (very likely) with incorrect dimensions.

Carparts.com is selling an "OE" not "OEM" tank. That is significant in that an OE tank could be a totally different dimensions, not compatible with other components. Looking at the picture on their website the tank shape bears little resemblance to the OEM Toyota tank including the pump opening. I would doubt the skid plate would be compatible.

You get what you pay for.

i needed a tank and was unable to find an aftermarket tank that wasnt an extended range tank, it was from the dealership or nothing. why are you replacing it, if it has a crack depending on the location you may just be able to repair the tank. i was able to send mine out to have the crack in mine patched and brazed.
