Corbet - Thanks for the info. Did you explore the possibility of cutting the metal bracket behind your mounting location in order to flush mount it?

I placed an trans temp gauge in that same panel, directly over the cup holder, to the left of your HAM location but don't recall if there was any room behind the metal bracket over the passenger side. Do you recall if there was any room or even have any install pictures of your install with the HAM removed?

I don't have the picture your looking for. I did not look at cutting the bracket. Don't remember if there was room behind it or not. Figured that bracket was there for a reason? Don't know its been 3 years since my install.

averagejoe, I installed my CB in the space between the driver seat and console. I fabbed up a bracket out of some angle and mounted it where the cup holder went.

For my Ham radio I'm running an Icom 208H and I mounted it above the rear view mirror on a Ram ball mount. The actual radio is mounted in the back with the jack and other tire tools.

And for an external speaker I have an older Radio Shack speaker that fits perfectly under the parking break handle. (No interference with its operation.) I use that for the Icom. If you wanted to get a new CB a Cobra 18 WX ST II has the speaker on the face and I believe it will fit a DIN opening.

My 2m is mounted below the head unit, both are bolted to the stock mounting brackets (very minor mods/drilling/spacers). CB is stuffed into the ash pocket, had to cut the mounting tabs for the ash tray. 90deg antenna adapter gets it in only as far as shown, she's a bit long. this is a '97, I need the kenwood for race radio freqs mostly in baja.

Firestick in the stock position, inspired by another guy here on mud, I added some mounting to the antenna motor mount to cantilever the antenna so as to not bend back my fender sheet metal when I hit the trees. has been on for half year or so no probs.

Rideit,

Nice setup! Very clean and seems very useful and practical while driving.

Who are you pitting for? It's been a while but growing up in the SoCal area I used to go and pit all the races including Baja. I'm not that old but it's when Roger Mears and Walker Evans were still racing. Our pit was for Roger but did help out at Evans pit once down at the baja 1000. Great times.

Monty321 - very cool.

Was playing with the PC122XL and find it would fit in the din spot under the CD player but I think you guys might be correct that once I go to the HAM I will use the CB less so the ashtray mount might be the best. I think I like the compact Midland one is the one I like the best it's 1/4" taller than the Uniden one but I think I can make it fit.

Thanks for the ideas everyone?

Thanks, I grew up racing D38 and naturally started going to baja more as I got older. Mostly we use the radios for our own group comms now, but sometimes end up doing a little remote backup pit for any of our local bike racers. By the nature of baja we always are fixing someone's rig somewhere along the course :) My shot at racing the 500 was blown with my knee.. but I'm good now so a future baja race could be in the cards. I co-drive with a buddy of mine in the 1495 truck (well until all this crap just happened and shut down local racing.. we'll go north when we have more fine tuning with the truck)

Here's my CB mount during mock up. I'll have to get some current pictures as I have my 2M HT mounted just below.

In an LX450

I mounted the Yaesu FT7900 transceiver just above the drivers kick panel which is an easily accessible yet out of the way location. The face plate was mounted under the stereo on an aluminum bracket. I mounted an external speaker in the stock sub-woofer location. The mic not shown is mounted under the face plate on the slanted part of the dash.

Here are some pics

For CB, I use a mag mount Wilson LilWil with an old radio Shack handheld.

Marks4wd use to have an overhead console mount for radios but I don't currently see it listed on their site. According to my wife there is a box from oz sitting in the garage as I ordered one back when they were on sale - shipping actually cost more than the console. Sorry I can't offer more feedback on it yet. I ordered it because I was running out of space where others have mounted their radios and I don't have any metal fab skills (probably could have made a console out of wood and covered it with matching fabric now that I think about it). Anyway seems like someone should be able to make a console for that location for less than what the shipping on mine cost.

Also, Nakman chimed in but failed to mention the cool mic holders he makes for radios. When you get a chance go to his sig line and check out his site.

Monty 231, what kind of CB is that? Also, I see you are trying to brown nose Cdan with that Avatar - send me a PM if it gets you super extra discount mud pricing.

The smaller uniden will fit in the ashtray slot IIRC

Yup. That's an option, but I've already got a big gap in the dash due to a single-din head unit (I wasn't impressed with the fitment of the pocket/storage space). With a couple bucks worth of materials I can dress it up to look decent (I've got some wood lying around in the garage...I may be able to make use of that).
