I kept detailed records of my gas mileage on the freeway to Moab.
For those interested here is what I got:

About 90% freeway, 10% 2 lane highway. (Figures do not not include the driving in Moab itself.)
Speed varying between 60 and 70 mph average for all segments.
A/C on about 1/2 of the time.
Elevation difference between home and Moab: 4000 ft plus many hill climbs, up to about 7500 ft.
285 MT/Rs inflated at 53 and 60 psi when hot (mpg corrected for 6% speedo error)
Load: rear seats removed with about 500 lbs cargo (guessed)
Engine oil: 15W40 Delo 400
Diffs and xfer case: Dino gear oil.

gas mostly 87 oct from Flying J. Some 91 octane as well.

Best (200 miles) segment: 17.93 mpg avg
Worst (166 miles) segment: 15.05 mpg avg

Average outbound (783 miles) trip: 17.15 mpg
Average return (788 miles) trip: 16.21 mpg

Overall: 16.7 mpg.

I can't figure out the cause of the variations depending on elevation, octane, A/C, speed etc. No correlation seen. Puzzling...

Not too bad with MTRs and 15W40 eh? (note the 50+ psi on the tires though...)

And even stranger is how your home moved 5 miles while you were gone. Weird. Does the wife somehow seem diifferent?

yes, wife looked more tired than when I left... strange!
Return route included a side trip to Harbor Freight and 4WP. After that the load was much higher... Go figure! But not cause of mpg difference I'm afraid.
Either way, took a somewhat different route in the PRK cuz, you know, some of us like to live dangerously...

You should be happy with that mileage, I think.

e99999,
You have stock gears?
You should of stopped at Cristo's and got the correct speedo gear.
With my 285's and the speedo gear, the speedo/odmater is "right on" dude
I have stock gears.

You like having the speedo running slow?

sure, that way I don't get speeding tickets...! :D

AAAAHHHHHHH, if you have stock gears and oversized tires, your speedo will read slow and you will be going fast.
If your 6% off then at 50mph your are going 53 mph.
At 80 you will begoing 85.

Not a big deal but on my 60 my speedo was 17% off
55mph on my speedo was realy 64 mph. 80 mph was 93 mph WOW

If you want to not get tickets, you need smaller than stock tires

It takes me a little less than half to drive 100 miles doing 70-75, sometimes hit 80, with A/C on half the time and almost always usin cruise control. Now that I think of it, I haven't cleaned the injectors(don't know how) nor have I replaced my air filter in over a year . That could be why I get an avg of 10mpg with mostly city driving, on stock cruiser no lift or anything.

Someone mentioned that your speedo is off by -6%, shouldn't you increase you mileage by 1.06?

BTW with 305's nittos my speedo is spot on, at least by GPS.

Come on Eric. Even I was able to change the speedo gear purchased from Christo. Well worth it!

sheesh, guys....
well, at least there were a couple of replies addressing gas mileage... :)
