Before adding the roof rack I was getting around 13 MPG. Coming back from Moab with 5 empty NATO gas cans on my rack, plus a 35" tire my MPG went down to 11.6.
I have 315/75/16R MTRs, 4:88 gears and a lot of weight on my rig.
Mobil 1 15w50 in the engine and Delo on the rest of the Cruiser.

The most aggravating thing about having the gas cans on the rack was the loss of power. Having them up there was like having a parachute brake.

Alvaro, the word at Slickrock was that you put the cans up there not as a parachute but as padding in case you rolled over... :D

edit: correction, in case the *rig* rolled over...!

I just drove home from school which is almost exactly 300 miles on my speedo. I burned 24 gallons, so with the 6% correction for the speedo that's 318 miles out of 24 gallons. That works out to 13.25mpg. Not too bad considering I've got the ARB rack on top and about 500 lbs of crap in the back. The road home is also a lot of up and down which eats into the mileage. I averaged b/w 60 and 70 as well and never rode it hard the entire trip. That's with fresh Mobil 1 10w30(as of this afternoon) in the motor, mobil 1 gear oil in the front diff, and whatever was in everything else when I got the truck(I know, I really need to address it...)

Here's how I did (all numbers used for calculations are from my Garmin GPS V)
Going to Moab:
roseville,ca - winnemucca, nv: 279mi, 13.37mpg
winnemucca,nv - wendover,ut: 238mi, 15.10mpg
wendover, utah - sandy, utah: 132mi, 14.43mpg
sandy, utah - moab, utah: 252mi, 14.54mpg
Average MPG - 14.36

Fueled twice in Moab - MPG on trail were 6.27 (fins&things and golden spike) and 6.88 (hells revenge); this includes driving in town.

Returning from Moab:
moab, utah - wellington,utah: 109mi, 15.39mpg
wellington, ut - wendover, ut: 244mi, 15.63mpg
wendover, ut - elko, nevada: 111mi, 13.41mpg
elko, nev - lovelock, nevada: 198mi, 14.65mpg
lovelock, nv - roseville, calif: 253mi, 14.57mpg
Average MPG - 14.73

Average speed to Moab was 70mph - 75mph
Average speed from Moab was 75mph - 80mph

Total fuel cost was $371.97

On the way to Moab, I drove solo. On the return trip, I caravaned with alvarorb and Cruiserdrew; I was able to draft behind them for most of the trip which played a role in the improved fuel economy.

1997 lx 450, ARB front, sliders, slee rear, OME heavies, 315 MTR, stock 4.10 gears, etc.

Have any of you tried one of those vortex, or tornado things for the air intake to imporve milage? They say approx. 15% increase, though "they" tend to say alot.

They only thing those things will do is decrease the amount of currency in your wallet by 15 to 20 percent.

My stats to/from Chicago:

Total mileage around 3200 miles
Total fuel burned (approx) 260 gallons
Avg miles on the hwy: 12 - 16 mpg

I got better mileage coming home from Moab (tail wind + downhill).

I was on 2wd the entire hwy trip.

Yoko Geo AT 315s tires, 4.56s, Thule cargo carrier, bumpers/sliders/dual tanks/etc. Vehicle weight was around 6,800 lbs.

I finally got around to running my numbers from our trip to moab.

We drive 2157 miles round trip (not including around moab ect..) and used 160 US gallons of gas. That's an average of 13.5 mpg (US gallon).

The total cost for fuel was around $400 or about $0.20 per minute of cruising on the interstate.

Oh, that's US dollars and also assuming that my compensation for 33" MTRs is that the speedo is off by 6%.

Riley what gears are you running and how heavy was your foot?

Phil - stock gearing, a bit of junk up on my roof rack and a very heavy foot. I was averaging around 75 to 80 miles/hour whenever possible.

Seem like crappy mileage?

Given that you were hauling stuff on that cute little rack, I'd say that you got pretty good mileage.

My lowest was 9.6mpg and my high was 12.9. That was loaded with 3 people's gear and a pop up camper weighing in at about 1600lbs. 73.8 mph average speed. Top speed 80.6 mph. 3FE to the floor, 35s with stock gears. :( I miss that truck!

My mind comes up with something all together different when I hear the phrase:

"cute little rack".

Off to chat I go.....

OH YA BABY,
Cheers,
Sean
