I kept detailed records of my gas mileage on the freeway to Moab.
For those interested here is what I got:
About 90% freeway, 10% 2 lane highway. (Figures do not not include the driving in Moab itself.)
Speed varying between 60 and 70 mph average for all segments.
A/C on about 1/2 of the time.
Elevation difference between home and Moab: 4000 ft plus many hill climbs, up to about 7500 ft.
285 MT/Rs inflated at 53 and 60 psi when hot (mpg corrected for 6% speedo error)
Load: rear seats removed with about 500 lbs cargo (guessed)
Engine oil: 15W40 Delo 400
Diffs and xfer case: Dino gear oil.
gas mostly 87 oct from Flying J. Some 91 octane as well.
Best (200 miles) segment: 17.93 mpg avg
Worst (166 miles) segment: 15.05 mpg avg
Average outbound (783 miles) trip: 17.15 mpg
Average return (788 miles) trip: 16.21 mpg
Overall: 16.7 mpg.
I can't figure out the cause of the variations depending on elevation, octane, A/C, speed etc. No correlation seen. Puzzling...
Not too bad with MTRs and 15W40 eh? (note the 50+ psi on the tires though...)
