My '78 FJ40 with a '79 2F has been desmogged... As far as I know there are no electronic parts involved in running the engine. Do I need to retain the emissions control unit? The truck runs fine without it, apparently.

I think it also controls the cycling of the charcoal canister valve, assuming you still have one.
I don't, but I intend to add one back in maybe.
What input would it be using to control the logic?

Mark, I've been running my 1970 with a 79 2f for 15 years without it with no issues. I have also not ran the charcoal canister. Adding that may throw a monkey wrench into it but I really don't think it will.

Years ago I kept blowing the engine fuse. With help and Paragon, we figured out it was in the computer. With advice we bypassed it. When I pulled that motor to swap. I never bothered with the computer.
I'm Jim or Mark would have a little better insight.

The 78 computer controlled distributor timing, EGR, throttle positioner and outer vent control valve. The 79 computer controlled air injection, fuel cut solenoid and outer vent control valve.

Thank you!

So... I have a "large cap" distributor, no EGR, a '79 2F, unknown year carb and no charcoal canister. I am interested in getting this set-up "correctly" given the mish-mash of components.

If someone is willing to assist further what info/pics can I provide to help with that process?

Does your carb have the fuel cut solenoid? Wired to ignition switch?

Are you just wanting to get the evap system going?

The basics for running an evap/charcoal would likely be the VSV (it might still be there) and a basic vacuum operated purge valve:
Amazon product ASIN B00557YRP2
The VSV prevents any purges from kicking in until the engine is warmed up, and the purge valve kicks in when you're off idle. I did a similar setup, but mine was all controlled by a Holley Sniper and electrics/solenoids vs vacuum.

Thanks!

I'll take a closer look tomorrow to see what's there and what's actually hooked up.

My initial goal was to remove the "computer" if it is not needed.
I could be convinced to add in a charcoal canister.

If you are desmogged and your carb does not have the FCS then all that's left is the evap system that can be accomplished without the computer.

I just went through all of this, let me know if you need pictures, diagrams, etc.. from my 78.
Thank you. I'll let you know.
(hey, are you still on Long Island?)

Here are some pics. I'm embarrassed to admit that I'm not sure about the details as mentioned by some of you. if these pics shed any light on my set-up I'd appreciate that perspective/input.
