Hi All,

Now that I have had the cruiser for ~6 months I am wanting to fine tune the operation. 1974, emissions vehicle (bypassed) which is pretty stock mechanically other than DUI distributor.

I have a few mechanical issues that I am trying see if they are all carb related.

-If it has been more than 1 day the Cruiser needs starter fluid to start. No gas is shown in the carb window.
-When killing the engine after a drive, if I don't all but choke out the engine with choke there will be a really loud backfire. If I press in the choke to almost a sputter, then there is no "BANG!".
-On a few occasions this summer I was not able to get the cruiser started again after driving and turning it off. We would drive it 15-30 minutes to lunch and then try to start it 1hr later with no luck. On these occasions I did see bubbling gas in the carb viewing window. After letting it sit for a few hours it was able to be started again

I have looked up a few threads on siphoning, but not sure if all of my issues were related or I need to tackle them individually.

I have identified the carb as a "9/73-1/75, California, with EGR" from SOR.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like problems related to fuel delivery or spark quality. The first thing I'd do is pull the spark plugs, photograph and clean them. Where does the gasoline sit in the bowl window on the carburetor? When was the fuel filter last changed?

Hot starts can be trouble, but, usually it helps to open the throttle when hot-starting, or the fuel-mix is often too rich in the summer environment after shut-down.

I'm confused by this. Usually, when the choke knob is pushed in the choke is off. When you pull the the knob the carb is choked, the more it is pulled the more the carb is choked. Are you driving with the choke pulled?
When was the last time you did a good, thorough tune up? Maybe even a carb rebuild? What is your timing set at right now?
The emptying float bowl might just be old gaskets at the drain bolts, new gaskets come in a rebuild kit.
Backfires can be due to several things, one of which is timing.
Trouble with hot starts can be due to several things, even timing.
