Hello IDave, I'm thinking the crank went the way of the cam. Since the load from the valve train is transmited to the crank opposite the output load (wringing a rag). Bad things happening in the valve train laod up the crank with a 2 to 1 torque on the crank. All thats just guessing though, U NO Dogman, opinions welcome so what do YOU think?

It would be interesting to see a picture of it.
 
Long block back from engine rebuilders

OK, ok Grant5000 something, you were right. If I would have listened to ya in the first place.............Oh boy, and to think I spent time on a Texas horse ranch........Never did learn much from them things ceptin don't turn your back. Hey Trollhole, you some kind of clariwhatever, you uns the one who said you saw a 2F in my future. Sooooo, check out the picture here. Much to relate about all this but no fun without pics and the pics will have to wait until I am ready to remove the saran wrap. Waiting now for a new cam and lifters.

New Toyota lifters

Recieved my new Toyota lifters. A quick visual inspection revealed nasty burrs around the oil holes and several nicks. Also the concave surface on the lifter tops are not centered at all. Major disapointment, these things are nasty, not even sure if they are any better at all than the econo lifters offered by Man-a-fre. The only good thing I can think to say about them is that they are hollow and will resevoir more oil than the cheapies (which are solid and cross drilled). So..........took them to work and knocked out all those nasty burrs. Unbelievable, JUNK. Toyota, you break my heart.

Wow Trollhole! no I have to admit my stock Toy lifters don't look that bad. Please tell me you traded positions in the second picture. I'd hate to think one lifter has a rough top and the other has a rough bottom. Where did you get those? Is the rough one an aftermarket? Because I have to admit, even the cheapy Man-a-fre lifters looked better than that.
 
Recieved my reground cam today, Action time

Couldn't get a new cam from Downey because they were out of stock for a couple of weeks or more so I SETTLED for a Man-a-fre regrind (groan). Ordered the RV grind. One more time......torpedoes away, dang I bought one with the press on timing gear (now I know....they press on the gear then weld the two halves of the camshaft together) , bearing surfaces showing subsurface nicks. Good news is the journals miced to in spec. Had the timing gear pressed on. Thrust plate gap is at max spec with the new plate. So guys, hang on, enjoy the game while I slap this thing together, give me a beer toast before half time cause I'ma wrenchen fool this here weekend.

cam journal bearings

Had me a thought, yes, it did hurt a little. Those cam journal bearings......... disaster? Getting paranoid? Don't match up specs with the cam then another roadblock, order and wait grrrrrrrrr, BS has definetely made me sour on this whole thing. So..snap gage the outer journal to see if I am wrenching this weekend or supporting budwieser. Journal is 1.8883", Bearing is 1.890", the bible says 0.006" max oil clearance, looks like I am wrenchin for sure. Finally. These things in the pic-snap gages, don't use them, they are not and never will be a replacement for bore gages. If any one ever tells you they can measure with them accurately (and they believe it) well here's their sign...trust me I really do know. Years and years, I have measured to the the gnats ass (ever wonder? a gnats ass is 0.000010"). Ok, that said, First put um in the hole, slightly snug up that clutch knob, rotate through perpindicular, remove, tighten the clutch, measure with mics, carefull not to overtighten both, the clutch and the mics. Laugh at your result, do it again and again and again. Still not accurate but well......... just barely better than calipers.

The crank side timing gear

Tossed the gear in the oven at 500 f, installed all of the bolts I could find in order to help the gasket goo seat, those two on the bottom, will come back of prior to cover install. Tossed the hot gear on there (wow, what a difference there, plenty of clearance between the gear and the shaft but still had to use a 4 lb drilling hammer and a socket to seat it.

Cam bearing alignment

Well, I guess it is time to tear into the plastic and install that cam. Here I am using my 90 deg pick to make sure they installed the cam bearing so that it aligns with the oil holes. Carefully, and yes they did.

Inserting the cam

I gently slid her home, reaching in to guide the cam through the bearings. The cam would not slide completeley home so I ended using the brass hammer to finish the job, tapping on the gear end of the cam until it went home. Tight.

Missing hardware

The first hardware causualties, the cam thrust plate bolts, nowhere to be found. A trip to Ace on 122 @ Powell (those guys are the gooduns). Used my mics to check hole depth, new 8.8 grade 8mm X 1.25 here, that otta do it.

Cam thrust plate bolts

I used the ol alignment thingy to center the thrust plate holes, the shorty socket to send the bolts home. Here is a place to be carefull not to drop your bolts, no fun fishing in that hole. Loctite blue on all three, torqued to 24 ft-lbs, one spec has it 10, seemed kinda wimpy. Bolts backing out here would be motor death I think. So new lock washers too.

Oil squitrer

Make sure this puppy is not clogged, put your lips up to it and blow, compressed air is a no no while building a motor. Drove it al the way home, backed it out, until the wittle hole aligns with the gear contact point ( see the slot there, think they did that on purpose?). Used a small punch and the brassy to gently stake it, after all, it is made of brass. All of the yellow paint? Those mark the camshaft oil holes, thinking maybe I will be able to get it all aligned so that when I spin the oli pump I will be able to see oil pumping up through the rockers. Dreamin?

Check out the cool hardware, the bollts have rubber seals and have been staked. I cleaned the block contact area, put sealant around the holes on the mount and also on the bolts along with loctite blue. Torqued to spec and then staked. I'm thinking that you could install the mount upside down here, the litttle 8mm hole up, ya.

Oil pump install

Comparing new to used, same, same. Pop the pickup and delivery pipes off and transfer one at a time. Dont tighten them down yet. All of these things, don't ask me how I know, I mean it's not like I made every single mistake or something, oh no not me see.
