Copied over in response to some questions about traction in the old tech thread:

Good timing actually.
I'm in the process of changing the plastic I use to a more stable option and the new company actually has a material that looks very promising as far as traction is concerned:
GRIP-X

I have samples on the way right now.

The rubber is just not working out, the dies are cost prohibitive and nothing sticks very well to the surface of the plastic. The patterns, durometers and thickness of the standardly available rubbers (I would need to use a standard because of the small quantities I would use)are just not a good fit to the application either.

I'm exited to see what this new plastic is like, and I have a supplier lined up that should be able to get it to me at a pretty reasonable price.

Looks excellent. I like the idea of the simple lock, too.

So, immediately after posting that I went and opened today's delivery of boxes and wouldn't ya know the samples were in there.

The new texture stuff looks great, and the normal matt black looks just as good as the current stuff, but is supposed to be more dimensionally stable.
I can't be sure of the actual grippyness with such a small sample, but this looks like it will be a great option on the lids.

For the simple locks, is it possible to get three locks to work with just one key? I'm just trying to think ahead to when I get the side panels. It would be nice to have locks on the two side panels and one tailgate lid but not have to have three separate keys for each lock.

Also, is the grip-x going to be more expensive? It looks great.

Got mine the other day. Beautiful.
Hows the list looking for the side panels? How well does the new plastic match the old?
Is the grip-x going to be an add on accessory to the lid?

Thanks Again!
Hey Derek, thanks, glad you like it.
I've got you down for some side panels, but you haven't sent me any pictures?
That list is moving along well, less structured than the tailgate list, remember I'm doing them in order of pictures received, more info on that in the side panel thread.

The new plastic is an exact match to the old, if I gave you two samples you would not be able to tell a difference. It is supposed to be more stable though.

And the grip plastic would not be able to be an add-on. It would be nice to get thin stuff and be able to screw it down on top of the old, but the thinest it comes in is 3/8", that's almost as thick as the lid is already. It would have to be a whole lid option. I still haven't found anything that fits the bill for being screwed down over the old stuff.

Yeah, I don't have that many key profiles available to me (I'm one of the small guys, no custom sets) so it is easy to match up the keys. The best part is that the key cores are serviceable, that means that it is easy to remove the actual tumblers and re-key to locks to suit, they are even common key blanks, so if you had another key that fit in the hole you could have the cylinder matched to it. But even when folks want a locked set of side panels it is easy enough for me to pull through the box and get another of the same key profile.
Ducks Also, is the grip-x going to be more expensive? It looks great.
Of course it is!
What kind of question is that. :grinpimp:

I am working on changing my supplier for the plastic as well though and I think I'll be able to keep the price down. My goal is that I will be able to get the improved plastic for close to the same rate as the regular plastic, hopefully little to no price increase for that, and then the grip plastic would not be much more than what I pay now. I will hazard a guess that it will be more expensive by $20 or less. Still working on it.
Heck, the samples just showed up yesterday.

Kevin: another key option that is worth chasing down(maybe) is the locksets that Tuffy uses. They can key match, and the locks are beefy. They sell them for under $15. Not sure how easy it would be to get them to help... but I would think it was handy to have one key for my console, and tailgate, and rocker storage (and drawer, for that matter).

sandcruiser, I still think your original idea is the way to go for real security, padlocks! :grinpimp:

And I've got you down Sethro!

And....I got the grip plastic in and build it into a lid (this one is yours Ducks), it looks cool, and is pup-approved. :D
Quite grippy, the trade off will be clean-ability, the grip gate is for dogs and climbing in the truck, the smooth gates are for cooking and whatnot. It wont be for everyone, but I am really happy to have a canine friendly option available. It's not tooooo pricey either, I can do a grip lid for a $15 charge.

Kevin-Got your email, I've got to get on this. Nice work as usual.

That grip panel looks good! The color matches really well and the plastic isn't too shiny for the coating on the frame.

So, anybody wanna trade a NIB slick/cooking panel for the next grippy/pup friendly panel that Kevin can cook up?

Damn, and there I was thinking I'd be clever & get in my order early.

Another lock option might be Yakima's SKS lock-cores... then the key could unlock most alla da toys.

You waited so long to install your lid that now you don't even want it!?!
:grinpimp:
We can work something out CJ, I could make a copy of your lid out of the new material, or we could do an exchange if needed.
We will get the doberdogs sorted out.

Yeah, it is a bit shinier that the regular plastic, seems to be because there are more surfaces to catch the light. With the regular stuff one of the things that I have been trying to do was keep all the blacks the same, and have the same general sheen overall. The new grip stuff does not have quite the same continuity, but I am probably the only one who would be bothered by it. :grinpimp:

Ducks Excellent! Can't wait to get mine in. I'm saving my pennies for the quarter panels next.
I'll get that one wrapped up and shipped out, should leave on Monday.

Cruiserdrew Kevin-Got your email, I've got to get on this. Nice work as usual.
Just let me know.

kevin, how close are those 80 lids now?

????? I have one here with your name on it, hadn't heard back in a while, figured you were toying with the hidden idea instead?

email coming your way. last email exchange i thought i was waiting for you.

Looks like I am getting very close  Cant wait to get installed hurry up Kevin

Hey Dan,
Your are super close now, and being excited about it is enough to move up the 80 list for me at this point.
The top of that list has been moving way too slow, I have been waiting a long time for some to get back to me and I have way more open contacts on there than I like.

This goes for anybody else that is right near the top as well: but Dan, why don't you email me the info on what you would like on your lid, the latch options and if you want grip plastic and I will get moving on it, thanks for being patient.
