Search is not my friend...:crybaby:

Can you use a fj60 PS box in a 40.......if so use a SBC pump to power it?

Links? Pics

Yes and yes.

Do a search, I know there are pics, because I have posted some. If you really can't find any then maybe I'll post them again. ;)

Just so you know, there are lots of ways to skin this cat. Don't think the first pictures you see are the only way.

This swap has been done to death...........

Common as DIRT..........

Given my experience so far with the 60 series Power steering I wouldn't do it. The 60 power steering craps out at low RPM's, exactly when you need it most.

Not with hydro assist added. :flipoff2:

Seriously, the saginaw pump, with a properly sized pulley, makes a difference compared to an FJ60 box in at FJ60 with the toyota pump.

A regular saginaw or scout box has more assist than the FJ60 box, but the FJ60 box, IMO is better on the street, installs in a better location than a standard saginaw (scout is a very similar install as FJ60), and of course, is Toyota (for those who care). Also, if you really need the boost, hydro assist more than makes up for any assist advantage saginaw may have.

Is it the pump or the gear box that is the problem? I've heard both blamed. Once I get the PO deferred maintenance issues caught up on the 60 I was thinking a sag pump might be an easier first stab at fixing the problem.

I have the PSC sag gearbox and pump on my FJ40, so far I haven't felt the need to install the hydro ram that came with them, even with 36" TSL swampers.

I've never driven a 60/62 that I thought needed more steering assist, except one with a front locker and 35's. However, haven't wheeled many 60/62's.
I had no problems with my FJ60 setup with a sag pump with my 37's until I got aired down on the trail. Even then, it was mostly only going downhill in 4wd (front locker) that really gave me problems. That is why I now have hydro assist.

Given the same input pressure and adequate flow rate - the FJ60 box definitely doesn't have as much assist as a saginaw box.
I don't like what the standard saginaw (not Scout) installation requires, so I went with FJ60, knowing hydro assist would be required to get the low-end grunt I needed.

A sag pump may help, particularly a "souped up" one, but the stock steering in your FJ60 is never going to match up to the saginaw in your 40.

Edited for clarity. Scout install is very similar to FJ60.

Do you have a Scout box on your rig? How is the install any different than the 60 box if they are similar, less the 3 bolt mount on the Scout box?

I was referring to the standard Saginaw, not Scout. You know what I meant. Edited for clarity anyway.

I wish I had found a Scout box before I got my 60 box. Best of both worlds, unless you're into the all toyota thing.

dumb question..........

This may be a dumb question, but I don't know the answer so i'll ask it anyway....

can you do hydro assist over manual steering? or would that just become full hydro steering?

Soooo Scout box's are best?....Im building a SBC/Toyo tranny-transfer set-up. Trying not to booger up the powdercoated frame to much. Plan to run a chevy pump and ____ box. Im getting that the Scout box would be the best set-up? What years are best and what mods are needed?

thx

Scout box has more boost and larger sector shaft than FJ60/FJ80 box. Mounts in the same location, 3 bolts vs 4. Don't know what years, AFAIK all the power steering scout gearboxes are the same.

Either need to plate the outside of the frame and mount the box to that plate, or cap the inside of the frame with sleeves for the bolts and through-bolt it. Will likely not be able to use the stock shock mount. Have to figure out a way to make a drag link that will connect the Scout pitman to your tie rod.

Lots of ways to do it, do a little searchin, get your head wrapped around what the install will entail and ask specific questions.

FWIW, here's another good thread on a 60 swap: Brahma's Saginaw/FJ60 Power Steering Conversion - Rising Sun Member Forums Even if you decide to go Scout, it might help as it has some good discussion about sleeving the frame (I understand that Scout and 60 boxes mount up similarly). For some reason there's not as much info out there on the Scout PS conversion.

For the scout box plan on getting a different pitman arm, the stock one I saw was very long. The 60 box works very well until you get into larger tires and lockers. By that point you may want to go hydro-assist anyway. Then the power of the 60 box is moot.

If you go Scout box and sleeve the bolts into the frame you'll have clearance problems with the radiator frame. If you scab a 3/4" plate, drilled and tapped for the mount bolts, on the outside of the frame the Scout box will clear the radiator frame.

I have a full right up for 60 series steering. Look up my name and steering in the advanced search option.
