I did the scout box, scabed the outside rail w/5/8 plate and sleeved thru the frame. Used a Wagoneer 4" drop pitman arm. I had to move the rad over maybe a 1/4" just enuff for piece of mind & possibilty of a rattle. It was easier to remove the stk shock mount and adapt the ford tower. works great. The steering links are in a better alignment to each other than the old sag p/s steering was out front. It's the best its ever driven.

Look for a Scout II box. & steering shaft.

Search is not my friend...:crybaby:

Can you use a fj60 PS box in a 40.......if so use a SBC pump to power it?

Links? Pics

I run a 60 series PS box in my 40. Initially I ran the 60 box with a 60 series pump connected to my original B engine. When I did the engine swap for the 1HZ it came with a ps pump from the 78 series rig that the engine came out of. The 60 series box/pump combo moved 33s around on and off road with ease. The 60 series box/70series pump move my new 35s around on and off road with ease. Pics are in my build thread in my sig line.
Good luck,
John

Probably because scout boxes can be hard to come by.

Best bet is probably to get on a Scout forum and list a classified.

RockAuto Auto Parts has them for $350 incl. core charge.

Just a thought, but what about a saginaw bow from an Astro? Never seen one on a 40, but I've read about the swap. If I remember correctly it mounts up pretty much like a 60 or Scout box. And they should be much easier to find that a Scout box.

I believe POSER put a link in his post above about the Astro info.

Guys,
Not here to advocate or anything but I thought that I'd relate a recent trail story relevant to this discussion. I'm just back from wheeling really hard yesterday. In the lead pack no one was running less than 35s over a varied terrain of rocks, water, mud, and cliff ledges while weaving between trees and hood high grasses etc At every pause on the trail another guy came up to me and as we talked about our rigs the ps steering set up came up. Each had something different and everyone of them said that what they had was ok but, on reflection, for all of the reasons we debate and choose our individual setups, they wished that they had gone with the 60 series box. In a spectacular failure on the trail, a guy running 35 Super Swampers bent his steering linkage almost like a U, requiring it to be straightened, sleeved and welded on the trail so that he could keep going and we could get him the rest of the way up and off of the volcano. Almost everyone trying to console the poor dude told him to calm down and swap the minitruck box that he was running for a 60 box. Each one of them was running one of every other ps setups that people run in a 40. None of them was running a 60 box. They all recommended the 60 box over their own based on their experience and their observation of my box's performance. Again, just thought I'd relate a recent experience that seemed to be relevant to the discussion.
