I am sure this has been covered but I couldn’t find it. A certain cruiser company sold me an FJ62 frame when I told them I needed a 60 frame. Well I was por15ing today and saw it was stamped FJ62 on the side. As you can imagine I was not happy. I spent about $600 for the frame and about $200 for por 15, grinding discs and other various stuff. Well I was pretty upset. One phone call later I decided this company would never have my business again. They claim they told me that it was a 62 frame and that I said that it was fine. But why would I have said that if I could have gotten a 60 frame in the same condition for the same price? At that time I didn’t know that it was stamped into the frame. Or I wouldn’t be in this situation.

Well I feel a little better.

Here is the question. What are the differences? I think I read the motor mounts and tranny cross member are different. This place told me only the tranny mount is different when I called them on the phone. I really don’t want to do any fab work on the frame. I don’t have much time to do the swap and I don’t need to make it longer.

Does anyone need a rust free and por15ed 62 frame?

Thanks a lot.

I have a vague memory, that the FJ60s after 1984 had serial numbers starting with 3FJ60.....

Even the bellhousings are stamped "3F"

I would compare the position of the body mounts before you get too upset. It could just be an 85-87 frame. If that's the case, the transmission crossmember is different, so I hope they sent you that as well. My guess is that you are OK and if this frame is in good shape, then be happy. If it really is from an FJ62, your life is going to suck.

Pretty sure its a 62!

That is a serious bummer. Sorry, it looks like the metal is in good shape. Maybe someone with a rusty FJ62 can make use of it.

Im pretty sure the body mounts are the same.

Yeah body mounts are, but the motor mounts and tranny mounts arent. How much do you think is reasonable to ask for it? Now I also need to find a person who has a rust free 60 frame around here.

Can you cut the motor mounts off your 60 frame and weld them onto the 60 frame? If youve already got it down to the frame its not like you would be making the job much harder.

I could but I wont. I dont have the time. I paid for a 60 frame that everything will bolt up to. Thats what I wanted and I am not going to settle for anything different.

Speak with the company you bought it from and ask if they have a 60 frame that you want. Specify your year. The cross members are different on 60's through out the years.

Return the frame you have to the company you bought it from. Maybe you could talk them into powerder coating the new frame for you for tha same price.

Already tried it. The best they would do is to exchange it. But that means I would loose $200 or so and I would have to spend another $200 plus hours of work. Plus they want me to drive all the way there, pay for about 40 gallons of gas, I would have to rent a trailer again, $50 and they arent open on weekends and the soonest I could get there on a weekday would be mid June. They arent doing a thing to help.

I'd take a deep breath, count to 10, then remind myself why I was doing this - it's to get my cruiser back on the road with a good frame.

From what you've posted, the easiest/cheapest way to achieve that goal is to rent a trailer, drive back to the place you bought the frame from and swap out for a 60 series frame. You gotta manage this the right way. Everybody is human and we ALL make mistakes. Most mistakes take two people, so I would just take as fact that you own part of the problem. (Not trying to judge you - just being practicle.) Show them the awesome 62 frame you are bringing in for exchange, and ask to swap out for a 60 frame plus a few other parts you're gonna need. Don't ask for cash back. Don't ask for gas money. Trade your time/gas for a few extra parts you'll need anyway. Then drive home and continue with your project. When you're all done you'll have an awesome cruiser, and a story to back it up.

Peace.

Lovetoski, that is the most rational post I have read in a long time. Well said! Landcruising 60 sorry for your trouble but the will be reasonable when they see you face to face with that freshly painted frame.

good luck

true deal dude just brush it off $200 +work is not that bad,
your rig is the most important part of the project!
i once got the wrong s()it from a reputable place and they made me feel like
it was my fault, yeah it sux bad but hey what can you do???

tell them hey i just POR'd this thing can i have some sorta creit??

don't lose your cool dude, thats the worst thing you can do, trust me!!!

sorry to hear about this. I can undertstand the frustration, but why not just modify the 62 frame to work under your 60? If the motor mounts/transmission mounts are still in decnt shape from your old 60 frame, just cut them off and weld them to the 62 frame. It'd only be a few extra hourse of work, but I have heard a 62 frame is a little beefier than a 60 frame anyway....good luck!

cruiserparts doesn't really seem to care. I called and talked to the owner and said that this happened and he just seemed to come up with excuses. Then he assured me that the frame was exactly the same except for the tranny mounts. I told him this was unacceptable, as we were told the only thing that would have to be changed is the tranny mount. They said they would exchange it for another, but thats it, they get a PORed frame, and we are SOL. I also asked him if they would cover the expense of getting the motor mounts fixed, and he said no. That isn't the only thing cruiserparts has screwed up for us recently.....

If it's only the tranny mount, then I'd just figure out how to move/modify to make it work. That will be less time/money in the end. Don't I remember in an earlier post that you are keen to learn to weld? Maybe this is a sign that now's the time! Just trying to inject some humor into a difficult situation. (I know, cashola is the issue, and I do understand.)

Cruiserparts is an interesting business. They have lots of stuff, and prices are good. Of 4-5 times I've purchased, twice they've sent the wrong part. They sent out the replacement pronto, no hassles. I paid for shipping to return the wrong part. It bugged me a little, but in the overall scheme of things it's all good, and I'd buy from them again.

I love your project, and am following it closely. It doesn't look like fun exactly, but looks like a rewarding project in that you'll have a really solid cruiser to drive for a long time when you're done.

That Ladys and Gentlemen is poetic logic at it's best......well put and good solution.

There's another reason to get a 60 frame. In many areas emissions is based on the year of the frame. It's not likely that anyone would check but there is a thread on pirate about just this sort of problem right now (CHP checked the frame VIN for some reason during a routine stop).
