I think you'll like it! I tried it out today, and found it to be awesome! I tried various combinations of regular ol' 4-Lo with locked center, 4-lo 1st gear for downhills, MTS, and MTS+CC. CC at lowest speed is awesome for crawling up and down slopes. It noticeably reduces wheel spin, and starts-and-stops uphill, and skids downhill. It allows you to just focus on steering, and picking the best line. It almost makes it...boring? At low speed -1 MPH- it will occasionally come to a complete stop as it encounters an obstacle, such as a near-vertical step, and then start again, and overcome it as it apples more throttle. I was on desert terrain, and to be fair, it had rained a few days ago, so there was "decent" traction to start with. I run 275/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks at 16 psi. I have full skids and sliders, so not afraid to take hard lines. Went in and out of various washes, and took hills anywhere from 50 ft to 100 yards. One short section very close to 45 degrees, it crawled right up (and back down) in CC-lo. Went over moguls, loose rock, small ledges in the middle of ascents, etc.
Is it make or break? I don't think so. Could they be replace with simply better "skill"? To a point, sure, but the same could be said about ATRAC, CDL, F/R diff locks, or even low range. That's really not the point, unless you're into earning an award for most-minimalist wheeler. We should all be always improving our "skill", right? I find the GX to be more capable than my 100-series was, which was way more capable than my 60-series, and "for my wheeling needs", pretty close to my 80 series. MTS and CC are just 2 more tools in your toolbox for various obstacles, and at $450-$500 bucks for both, pretty dang good bang-for-the-buck.
