Took tge 40 out for a longer run today. Three things popped up. Two I think may be related.

She had a tendency to die when I was braking or coasting to turn, etc. also brakes worked, but felt like I was getting no help from the booster the longer I drove. Started off ok then got really bad. Any thoughts? Adjusted the idle up some when I got back but haven't driven again.

Other thing was the batt was really run down next time I cranked to test idle. Alternator isn't charging properly I guess...

Vacuum leak or missing hose could be causing your dying and braking issues. Where, I have no idea as I have no experience with a 40, but fits the issues. Past that, I got nothing.

Sounds like it's time for a new brake booster.

The dying while braking and lack of booster help are both symptoms of a bad booster.

Ugh. Is there a bolt in replacement available anywhere? Or do I have to go searching for a used one?

I say go OEM used instead of aftermarket. I bought some aftermarket booster from RockAuto, Centric or Cardone I don't remember, and it died within a few months. Plus I could not get the push rod adjusted properly.

Another FJ40 booster would drop right in of course but a 60 or 80 series, or 4Runner booster may also work.

The one that's in there now and dead was a used OEM that I picked up a few years ago. I have a feeling w the age of these vehicles finding a good used one is gonna be tough.

In need of rocker arm stud and valve cover nut for early 2F.

Unobtainium

Racer is making a high-quality reproduction for the 40 Series that is 1) plug-and-play and 2) works with 4-wheel discs. All of his other stuff gets rave reviews, so this is the way I plan to go for my '77

Cool. Will check that out. Also found a used OEM one in a part out.

Dug the GunRunner out over the weekend. It has not moved since it got off the trailer from the Crawl in Oct. Trying to get it ready for MardiKrawl. Battery was very low and unable to crank. Remembered that I won an Optima Yellowtop at the Razorback Ramble last June. Thought it would be as dead as the one in the 40, but more worth my time to jump it and charge it up. Date stamp is 3/15. Dropped it in and it had a great charge and it fired right up! Impressed!

Rear brake master circuit was almost completely empty with corresponding puddle on the floor. Looks like it is leaking between the master and booster. This master is a CCOT aftermarket I installed in 2003. It was my very first repair after bringing the GunRunner home. Any suggestions on a replacement master? I have rear disc brakes and upgraded the fronts to 2nd, or was it 3rd gen Pickup/4Runner SR5 V6 4-Piston calipers. The OEM booster died a couple of years later. It was replaced with a used pickup booster with the aluminum spacer at the firewall. This system has worked great and will stand the truck on its nose. 80 series non-ABS? Is there a 1" bore dual reservoir option? I think I have a used mid-80s Supra 1"+ bore in a box somewhere...

Also need to change the oil. What is the consensus on oil weight/brand with the ZDDP or ZDDP additive?

Advics (Aisin) BMT090 - non-ABS 4WDisc 80 series 1" master cylinders are dirt cheap on Amazon right now ($63 Prime).

Amazon.com: ADVICS BMT-090 Brake Master Cylinder: Automotive

Supposedly Advics is an Aisin/Denso partnership. Aisin is cast into the part though.

From my (short) research, just about any of the boosters will work. Some may provide more boost than others though.

That's a 42 page thread. Is there a summary page or site of what he is making? That 40 intake hose rules. Wonder if he did a 60

There is a link to his site in his signature line. I'd have linked it, but his site wont pull up at work.
