Reinstalled the new transmission and T case into my 78 and realized I was missing the retaining clips for the clutch fork. Ordered some from JTO but after successfully getting the bottom clip on because of the easy access through the inspection cover, I’m perplexed as to how to get the top one on without separating the entire bell housing. How important is it to have both clips on. I worked the clutch fork a bunch and it didn’t appear to be having any issues with just a single clip. If it’s necessary, is there a trick to getting it in such a tight spot and into the tiny little holes? Greatly appreciate any help.

I'd say it's pretty important!

You can install in place-maybe just recruit a friend with smaller hands. It's tight for sure, but not impossible.

2nd what Drew said. You need both clips. It's difficult, but you'll get it eventually.

ive taken many of those apart over the years without the clips and no problems including my own that didnt have the clips for the 30 + years i drove it .but thats just me .go with the popular option

But if you can do it, you should. Why not, it takes 2 mnutes and a bit of dexterity. For sure, if I could do it easily, the OP can do it too. Then you know it's right. Otherwise you won't know for sure it's being fully retracted.

My fork was shot when I took it apart, it basically fell out when I separated the tranny from the bell housing. Found a replacement from a friend with workable clips. I’d get em on there while you at it, peace of mind.

I think he's talking about the throw out hub clips. The U shaped ones.

A few years ago, both the clutch forks and the ball they ride on were still available new from Toyota and not expensive. Likely they still are.

X3, I've installed the throwout bearing clips afterword transmission installation. Very difficult but not impossible.

My bad, my though out hub was shot as well, agreed that you need them. I don’t think I could have put them on with everything assembled. No way my hands fit up in there.

I just had to go back and do this as well. I used a long handle curved needle nose pliers, a light and a mirror. It took a few tries but is doable, and yes I have big hands.

This is exactly what i was thinking. Another quick question since this is getting good response, does everyone close off the driver side non-used on LHD) clutch fork hole with some sort of plug/boot or just leave it open?

I just leave mine open, but then, i don't use the lower flywheel cover either...

I have the factory vent boot thingy in the whole.
