3rd group buy DT Headers

I think the past headers were also ceramic coated, at least the original group buy was as per Nick. The only thing that changed with this group buy was switching to 304 stainless.:meh:

I will be installing mine at a friends shop in Wilmington, NC. They will be on in a month. One question I have been having is this: If a manifold stud breaks what do I to to remove it and install a new one? Will this require drilling and tapping the engine? My rig is GA raised so 0% rust. I don't plan on having any breakages but you never know. 12 year old bolts....

You won't have any issues. If you have corrosion, which you probably won't, it will be on the nut/stud interface. In this case the stud will back out with the nut. Every one of my studs backed out.

So no heat issues? I have a set from this 3rd run in the garage.

If you go back a few pages, someone posted up the reasoning from DT on they changed the steel, IIRC it was due to a heat issue they discovered on a set of headers for another model of truck.

Do a search of on the other DT header threads or in the 100 section, if anybody has had heat problems they would have posted it by now. The original group buy was almost 2 years ago, so people have been running the DT headers for a bit now.

That's a relief. Im not planning on breaking any but s*** happens. Thanks for the clarification. I ordered 5 extra studs. Do you think that will be enough?

I bought my set (100LC) from the first group buy and had heat issue. Basically the header cracked after 11 months just at the Y. I contact Nick @ DT back in August and he sent me a new set last week. :bounce: Going to install them sometime next week.

Seems like rigs in rust free areas aren't having studs back out.

Wow - anyone else had issues like this? Which side?

Great Mod

I got my headers Fri. and installed them Sat. They are beautiful! And my wife is much happier that her rig does not sound like a POS. I bought this in Indiana and it has rust underneath. The headers were fine when I bought it but driving accross WY I hit a deluge and I think that is when I got cracks on both sides front cyl. All my studs backed out of the engine (with much force even though I had been blasting them with PB for the last 3 months) and two of the 6 head/CAT studs sheered off. I replaced the PS in 3.5hrs and the DS took twice as long due to one stubburn bolt that broke a couple universal joints.

Looks good, sounds great and feels better at the top end.

Very happy, thanks to Romer, Nick and all the tips posted.

I had 3 back out - West coast non-rust truck.

Well then - looks like 5 spares should be fine!

Hopefully it's enough. Do you think I could break the nut look and reuse it on the new stud? Hoping I don't have to

Possibly. Part # is 90080-17187. Pick up a few from your local dealer just in case.

Smog & Registration

Advice needed:

Anyone in CALIFORNIA with DT Headers? I am trying to determine if the Cal SMOG CHECK is going to cause me pain. Hate to spend the money/time with the headers, and then not be able to register.

I would really appreciate if anyone who has smogged their California 100 with the DTs on can tell me their story.

Nick says the smog status on these is still "pending," so as I understand it, there is no "label" or whatnot on the headers that a smog guy could look at and be persuaded it's all good.

In a related question, are the o2 sensor codes a pervasive issue with these (otherwise badass) headers, or maybe just related to installation problems? Assume this code issue recounted variously here would be another reason the truck could not be registered?

Finally, any good mechanics in NorCal who could help do the install (i.e., do the install, in less than the dealer's 13 hrs or whatever)? Referrals and recommendations welcome.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Eron

The install isn't going to throw any codes. I've done 2 of these install and the sensors are not an issue.

As far as smog I have not tested but I cannot see these being an issue at your neighborhood smog test station for visuals and certainly not at the tail pipe since the cats are intact.

Smog & Registration

Thanks RobRed. Anyone else have California Smog/Registration experience with the DT Headers? Is it a matter of how close the smog tech looks at the engine bay? are they required to look for certain things cats-forward?

I cannot tell if the sample size is too small, and the period too short, but I'd like to think that by now, someone in California would have run into problems, if indeed the headers were a reason to fail a test (and it would have been posted here as fair warning). I take the lack of registration horror stories as a good sign...

Thanks,

NN (nervous Nellie)

The purpose of the ceramic coating is to keep the heat inside the header. If you have experienced heat problems with a ceramic headers on another vehicle it would likely have been worse with an uncoated header. The 304SS is a better thermal barrier than the mild steel from the first runs so the 3rd run headers should be the coolest yet being coated and stainless.

I have a set from the first buy that I'm about to install... unless someone wants to trade me for a stainless set? didn't think so.

was beggining to worry, but they showed up on my porch today

Have Robbie coming over Monday to install them

Screw it....I'm in. I have a slight tick on the driver's side, and I am about to add about 200 lbs to the vehicle weight so the extra ponies should help. The stainless steel change put me over the edge. I sure hope there is an extra set when I call tomorrow.
