Well, after a rainy-day shake down run around the neighborhood, I see that the front diff gasket isn't doing its job. :bang: Out to the barn I go to disassemble my work- FIPG for the win!

The clouds this morning are still covering the tops of the mountains, but appears we got snow down to about 10.5k.
Pic from from last night; there's more up there this morning...

Ok, stupid question to the group! I have only owned 1 FJ80 1991 and it has the much-loved 3FE, but people say that they are slow (I don't drive fast) and that the rear end is small and not triple locked. BUT Toyota made the FJ80 f with the 3FE for a few years, just how much better are the FZJ80's? Just what am I "missing"?

thanks

The rear end is the same size as an fzj80, but it’s got a semi float axle

FZJ80 is 13.4% better. :flipoff2:

In all seriousness, this is completely subjective. The 3FE engine is heavier and less powerful than the 1FZ engine, but also very simple.

FJ80s are typically more affordable than an equivalent FZJ80. They’re also an older model.

FJ80s only have semi-float rear axles. FZJ80s have full-float axles. (Yes, Toyota-nerds, there are some exceptions).

Only some FZJ80s came with front and rear lockers from the factory. Almost all FJ80s did not come with lockers from the factory. (But lockers can be added to any truck).

You just need to decide how you are going to use your truck and what will meet your needs.

FWIW, I have a 1991 FJ80 and I prefer it to my old 1993 3x locked FZJ80.

FJ80 is by far more bulletproof than the 1FZ-FE after owning my rig for about a decade now.
Thats good to know, 2 months ago I lost compression in cylinders 5 & 6, and was thinking of going to LS swap, but my budget only allowed me to get a low mile used engine, swap. Rebuild the top end and keep on going, only have 238,000 miles on the truck.

This can go in the "for whatever it may be worth department..."

Now that I have been running the 3FE with 4.88 gears and 315 tires, I can say this is one of the best things that has happened (so far) in my quest for a really enjoyable off-road rig. The transmission isn't constantly hunting for gears (pavement & off-road driving), and seems really at ease and is performing better that I expected. Not that I have a bunch of experience, but wow, what a fun time I had with my brothers-in law this last week in the San Juan Mountains. I set Len up in the driver seat for Engineer Trail, and he couldn't believe how sweet the Cruiser handled the terrain. His brother Doug ran this trail with me 2 years ago in a rented Jeep, but was also very impressed when he got some seat time as well. Doug is a professional heavy equipment operator, and knows his stuff, so it was great to have his feedback. I have fallen in love with our LC all over again.

An extra win because my wife had a bad experience with a stall out on the trails a while back and was a bit gun shy of going out again. With the new brake system, gears & tires, she is excited to be behind the wheel again, even if it is a bit more of a stretch to get in! I told her I would install rock sliders and fabricate some bolt-up steps for mall-crawling duties, and can be unbolted for off-road use. She loved that idea! :bounce::steer:

Hey, all-
I'm trying to figure out if there is an OEM V-Belt from a different Toyota vehicle that will fit on our 3FE rigs that have had the smog pump REMOVED. (original belt is 90916-02193, WITH smog pump in place)

So far my searches indicate a Gates TR22525 or Dayco 22528 are correct fits for this. Has anyone found an OEM belt that will work for this length? My Google-Foo has been depleted. I believe the Gates belt is 19/32" wide and 53-1/8" circumference. Maybe above and beyond the Toyota OEM / Toyota OCD relm, (and I should get over it!!) but thought I'd check... :meh:

I have an OEM 90916-02141-77 for the Fan & Alternator
I have an OEM 99332-11180-83 for the Air Conditioner Pump

Have a great weekend!

Motor rebuild @247k. My HG failed. Decided to do a full rebuild. When I picked up my LC it was in pretty bad shape.

I’m pretty excited to have it done soonish. The only thing left will be front axle rebuild, and new body bushings. Everything else will be pretty much new!
Congrats! That is a big project.
