Proud owner of a '92 FJ80 - bought in April, 2013 and learning more every day (well, more like a little bit each week/month as time and energy permits). What I'd really benefit from is an afternoon (or 3) with someone who really knows their stuff and can simply educate me (not asking for some free work here)......

  • Go over everything under the hood, diagnostics included....
  • Go over both axles, brakes included...how can I tell when axles need to be rebuilt/re-packed/etc., etc.
  • Exhaust - mine's pretty shot (leaks, loose, etc.) - what would you do? what are my options?
  • Advancing the timing....sounds difficult, talk me through it...
  • I'm sure there's plenty more....

In short, I'm plenty motivated to roll sleeves up and dive right in but doing it blindly on my own has already landed me a broken AFM (those two screws are nothing but an invitation to disaster). I'm also now trying to diagnose what seems like another AFM problem although I honestly don't think I did anything to cause it this time......:bang::bang::bang:

Is there a shop I can go to and literally get someone's devoted time (I'm fine spending some reasonable money in the process of learning)?

Any bored experts out there simply interested in sharing their accumulated knowledge with a relative newbie?

:beer::beer::beer::beer:
You say you like suds??? Well I can deliver plenty....and will even let you tell me what to pick up!!
:beer::beer::beer::beer:

I'd also be very interested in essentially getting a bonafide and legitimate equivalent of a PPI for my rig - some report that shows me everything I need to do to ensure it's up on all maintenance (Yes I have an FSM and yes I'm following some of the "general maintenance" ideas posted all over the place but am admittedly doing this a bit blindly).

In short, I'm more of a sit-down and talk to people kind of guy vs. read forums 'til the wee hours for months at a time. I'm open to suggestions and your wisdom.......talk to me people.

thx!

There is a guy in Flagstaff with a shop. I hear he does pretty good...

MoGas - Chuy mentioned your name - nice to meet you. Will PM you to see about finding a way to bridge the Flagstaff/Gilbert distance and get me what I'm looking for - thx!

I live in the east valley and have a 3FE. I have done a lot of PM and general fixes, Aussie Locker, exhaust etc. I also enjoy Coors Light. If you ever want to get together and help each other out send me a pm. Shawn

PMs replied to (including you Shawn) - thx all!!! I've got some options, MUCH APPRECIATED!!

I too am a new to the 3FE club (since July). I'll vouch for MoGas. He takes care of my 80 when things get over my head (often, and it doesn't take much!).

I've had my '91 since May 2010. I'm by no means an expert. I have had the exhaust redone, fixed a cracked head, replaced all of the leaky gaskets, serviced the front axle/birfs, replaced all hoses and vacuum lines, and plenty of other stuff. Hit me up if you have any questions.

Otter - sent you an email concerning your exhaust experience.

If anyone else out there in '3FE' land here in the good ol' Valley of the Sun was to replace their exhaust "soon" - what would you do? If you know of a local guy who can get something similar to what EMS is offering done for hmmmmmm......significantly less $$, talk to me.

thx all!

I used the same guy for the exhaust on my 3FE. Exactly the same setup. Works fine.

Works fine is an understatement.
It takes Otter a little while to get to 70mph :steer:but once he is there there is no hill going to slow him down!:hillbilly: Could it be the exhaust:hhmm:

Yea, I was thinking of the 93-94 with the dual cats side by side. Might be a little more challenging getting thru the visual smog inspection. John

The 3FE has the side by side cats also. I've been lucky, i guess, they haven't said anything.

Well unfortunately Mr. Possey doesn't seem to be available for any exhaust work any longer (thx guys for the emails, etc.). Mesa Muffler sounds like a no-go (not interested in a rusted out solution in 12 months per some feedback over in the 'Important Club Threads').

Last thoughts for someone who can do the work out in Gilbert/Chandler/Mesa/etc. ??

Anyone have experience/feedback with these gentlemen? https://forum.ih8mud.com/az-copper-state-cruisers/785286-body-fab-shop-east-valley.html

I have had good experience with Scottsdale Muffler - that was custom work on my 40, and on Michael's Blazer - I'll most likely be taking the 40 there again

I don't believe the newer style cat is invisible to inspector.
Curious if the inspectors are approving the 3 way cat to replace the two originals, or are they just ignoring the issue whenever they want ? I hope it is the approval, but my gut tells me that they are just ignoring it if the tailpipe readings are OK. Anyone have a solid answer?

Don't know for sure, but I think you're dead on with them just ignoring it as long as the readings are okay.
