37s on factory gears (1 Viewer)

Probably a dumb question but has anyone on here ran 37s on factory ratio and if so for how long and any issues?

I’ve run factory gears on 33’s and have heard a few people on 35’s with no problems running factory gears. Haven’t heard anyone trying 37’s though. Would be underpowered, but doable. Might heat up your transmission?

4.88’s on 37’s gets you close to stock gearing. I’m running 37’s with 5.29’s and think it’s just right. Can drive 80 mph on the highway and have lower than stock gearing offroad. Add the 25% low range gear reduction and your setup well for offroad.

20 years on 35's and factory gearing here and no issues but I would want to try my 37's on the same gearing. It would be miserable and I don't even hard core off-road. I went 4.88 but think I should have gone 5.29 TBH. I'm hoping V8 in the near future will make up for this though.

I ran 345 BFGs but if you put a tape on them they we’re likely just 36s.


Cruised the flatlands fine. Made it get great mileage but made it even more of a turd on acceleration

37" tires

I have been running 37"s long term. Have Cooper STT in 37-12.5R17, on Tundra 17x7.5" with 1.25" wheel spacers, if I were to do it again would go with 1". They are the narrowest 37" tire setup that I have seen, so easier to fit, keep as much flex/stuff as possible. Mine has stock diff gears...

35s vs 37s

I've been planning on putting chromoly axles and birfields on sometime soon, and do you think 4.56's would be enough? It's all about how much suckage you'll be able to handle. You could get away with 4.56s but if you're already going through the expense I personally would go no less than 4.88...

Thanks for the reply's I will probably do 4.88s at some point but my 35s are shot and If I am going to fork over all that money for new tires I want to go up a size, anyone have to trim? I don't want anymore lift I bet I will have to do some trimming for sure but I am ready for that.

I did for a while. V8 under the hood though. IMO, the worst part of 37 and stock gears is off road. Engine braking suffers for sure.

My stock 4 low gear on the 35s feels pretty good wheelin, I was thinking it would suffer but not too much. I just would hate to buy 35s again the get 37s right after in the same year tires arent cheap

Do I need to start a new thread? Slight change of subject what tires have you guys been running. Looking for more of a RT instead of MT because I do drive it on the street often so I need a good wheelin tire that wont wear out so fast on pavement.

In that case I’d get some decent ATs. I went with Cooper ATPs. Then maybe save up for some new rims and MTs to switch out if you’re gonna be doing serious wheeling.

I like the idea of RT rough terrains good hybrid I figure they will grip and not wear too bad, I still take my 80 camping alot of pavement driving. Or maybe have a set of cheap 35s to drive on thats a good idea. Anyone know if the general tire grabbers are any good wheelin?

I had ATP's on a truck years ago, they were the worst cooper tire and one of the worst all terrrains I ever had. the sidewalls are thin and they are terrible in the mud and snow. Once they are a few years old they are louder than mud terrains. I'm a huge fan of cooper tires, but those were terrible. Cooper ST maxx are good tires, but I like the mickey thompson baja boss AT's over them now, great all around tire with great sidewalls and they are silent on the highway. The baja boss at's are better in the snow than the st maxx as well.

So the mickey thompson ATs do good offroad even though they are all terrains? I like the quite and less wear if I can run AT I will
