The bigger you go the harder it will be to fit a spare in the stock location, and the more likely you are to damage it over time with heat from the exhaust.

im running 315's on ome heavy with 1" front spacer. spare fits in oem location...no issues with exhaust so far. 315s are usually about 34.5. 285s are about 1.5" shorter, and 295s are in between. 255/85s are pizza cutter, but are taller than 285s. imo, 285s still look too small on a 3" lift. mine first came with 285 AT, then i swapped for 315s.

with 315s your powerdrop will be most noticable, especially with a subtank, full rack etc. regear is recommended, but not essential.

e range with be a stiffer sidewall, so handling will be affected vs d but i dont think our trucks are that heavy enough to notice a difference, until you're towing or fully loaded.

you run 315 in the factory spare location? it's possible

has anyone else done this with no problems?

did you have to adjust the tire carrier?

I love my 305's :)

If you wanna go bigger, just take the air out of the spare

generally i was thinking 305's, as i'm more into camping than anything else,

"double" for wheeling in bc 33's be ok for most stuff?

yep, fits fine in the stock location. its about a couple inches away from the panhard, so theres some breathing room there but it butts right up against the rear cross member. i had to drop the spare in order to mount my pintle hook as theres no room to get a socket behind there with the larger spare. i had a receiver there too, but not the factory one...i think it was a reese, but was still able to put the 315 spare there.

i havent modded my carrier, but there is a mod that raises up the xbar the spare winch is connected to. basically just spacers. not sure if you'll be able to do that with the oem subtank though.

33s will get you more than enough clearance for most of the trails here in bc. most trails that youd want to run a full bodied 80 through anyways. get sliders though...because running boards wont last, and dented rockers are not fun.

fwiw, my 315s are about 40-50% in the pics, and measure about 33.85 inches.

imo, if you're stuck in choosing a size, id go with 295s because 285s are to short and narrow, 315s are big, and 305s are too short for their width.

You've got a nice ride my friend. I kind like the 285s, better mileage and less road noise right? Any suggestions for me? My 93 Land Cruiser is stock and I'm ready to start having some fun. I'm planning new tires and maybe wheels, big lights, new seats, stereo the works. All I've got right now is a mammoth Rand Hand Grill. I'd like maybe a little wide wheel base. Don't do much off roading yet, but it is my daily driver now so I need to be reasonable with gas and road noise... Cheers, Troy

I had 295/75R16s (34") I could fit them under the rear, but only just.
Now have 315/75R16s (35") and it defintiely doesnt fit, it rubs on the rear of the body and on the rear panhard, thats without a rear tow bar fitted, I could see no way to mod the spare tyre carrier either

Hankooks Dynapro 295"s The spare fits very tight, and that is why I did not go 35"s I am very surprise you have a 35 in the spare location!

What brand of tire do you have?

Ive been really happy with my 285's (at least until I go to a 315). Aren't the 305 shorter and wider than the 285 or 295's?

from bfg's site 285 and 305 are the same height just 305's are wider,....

so 295's fit in the spare location? cause they are according to the website; .6 taller than 285's & 305's

37's :flipoff2:

Cool, wasn't sure. There is the "spare tire mod", not sure how much it would help but a quick search should help for stock location.

yeah, I had 295 under the rear, gave about 1/2" clearance to the panhard.

I found that 295s where a lot more expensive, just because they are not a popular size in Oz.

Here is a picture, look at my spare it sits low!

If you plan to do any wheeling, you are risking damage to the spare in the stock location. 285s and 295s will both fit. Some have squeezed 315s in, mine wouldn't fit, it seems to depend on the tire.
IMO, 315s are a good fit for a lifted 80, but performance wise, it depends on your usage. I would see what the locals use before making a decision. My needs and yours may differ.

Another thought that noone has mentioned so far that I was a little concerned about is if I had to replace one or two because of trail damage, it would be a lot easier to find 285's in small towns or out of the way places than it would to find other sizes. Seems like most tire stores had 285's in stock, but had to order 295's or 315's. That may have changed now, they may all be easy by now. They're cheaper by quite a bit too, but again may be old data.

Dan.
