I'm good at starting projects and getting bored. Have yet to finish something I've started. Hope the mods my buddies and I do to this fit ok for this section.

<Story>:
I've had this banged up and rolled 40 for almost 3 years now. Bought it sight unseen after a 3 month stint of seeing it on craigslist. Guy delivered it in the dark - paid him cash and had to head out of town for a few days.

When I finally looked at I was stoked. I think I got a good deal for the economy.

It came with:
Factory PTO Winch
Saginaw PS
4" Skycrapper
Pontiac 350
Pontiac Tilt Wheel
Heavy duty roll bar
33 12.5 tires
Stock Disk Brake front axle

I spent about a year trying to get it going with my lack of knowledge and 2 bannana skills with some help from a friend or two. Put some money into it getting it to run (gas filter was culprit) and when it ran experienced some amazing death wobble. I replaced the U-Joints on the axles over at Bulls house. Threw them back in... still amazing death wobble. Rodney gave me a steering stabalizer and I towed it back home.

It sat for another year or so and a neighbor stops by when I'm in the back yard working... asks if its for sale. I said I'd take what I have into it. He never came back. The economy had tanked since then and I think he was looking for a steal.

The very next day I put it in the garage... and there it sat for about 4-5 months.

Last weekend (memorial day) I finally started this project. The first step was tearing it down... and I'm really good at this. I wasn't going to start for about 6 weeks... but wanted to sell some of the parts I'm not using to fund it. Its a good thing this thing didn't run good. The PS linkage was partially tent pole. Some of the bolts on the shackles were loose. It had been rolled and part of the body was loose. The gas line was right next to the engine and melted. Masking and duct tape were the PO's Mod of choice throughout the rig.

<Vision>
The vision I have for this rig is mild compared to some here and will possibly change but right now this is it:

- Keep the Pontiac 350 engine, but replace the carburation system.
- Replace Engine Mounts
- Replace rear frame mount and brace
- 4-Link it with the Proffitts setup, moving the rear axle 6" back
- Spring over the front
- Metal-Tech Tube Fenders
- Warn 8274 Winch
- Aluminum Front bull-bar with winch mount
- Metal-Tech Sliders
- Use existing cage with some gusseting
- Sandblast / PC Frame
- Upgrade to FJ62 axles (Longfields to come later)
- Tires - haven't figured out yet
- Metal-Tech Tube doors or make my own 1/2 doors.
- Volkswagon Beetle flower holder (09 model)
- Haven't figured out rear bumper yet

</Vision>

This will probably take me a year or two because I want to build it for $200. :hillbilly:

Here is the rules I made up for my own $200 Madness. All money that goes into this rig has to be money either made from parting it or other Landcruisers out. I know, its kinda crazy.... but it can be done.

Here is where I'm at. This section will get updated as the build goes on.

Updated 9th August 2009:

$200 cruiser - - Lost it when my truck broke down on the way to pick it up. Found again 10 months later. What started the madness. With inflation $250
FJ40 (Chia) that I bought (as a boomerang buy) when $200 cruiser fell through - $2300
U-Joint parts - $100
Haggling and horsetrading with Bull $200
Metal-Tech Sliders $314
4-Link setup for 60 series axles $1250
Another rust free cruiser $800
New Poly bushings $100
FZJ80 Master and brake booster $100
Sandblasting $400
Primer $70
Axles $200
4 spd and transfer case $250
Axle rebuild kits $500
Ruff Stuff front junk $177
Total Investment as of Updated date above: $7011

Profits from Parting Cruisers out to go toward build starting 26th May, 2009:
Skyjacker sold from Chia: $280
Axles sold from Chia: $400 28th May
Sold a cruisah... 29th May $1100
Sold Parts 29 July $300
Sold Parts 3 August $220
Sold Parts 4 August $165
Sold Parts 6 August $200
Turned in scrap 11 August $50
Sold Parts 21 August $300
Sold Parts 27 August $850

Total investment $7011. Needed for $200 build goal - $2946.

I'm off to sell parts and will put the project on hold for 6 weeks due to pre-existing business. Going to fix the rear frame pieces and do the spring over / 4-link then with a few friends and some beer.

i could have sworn that i'd already seen you part out enough cruisers over the years to build a 50k trail rig by now

Ya.. that all went to the diapers.. meh..

Dude, All you lack is finishing ! Gonna be a sweet rig. The Proffitts 4 link kit is fun to build.

Is this thing done yet? :D

My 2 cents: Skip the powder coating of the frame, Mike. It's a waste of money. You have full access to it now, so scrape it and paint it by hand. It's not going to be a show truck, so it doesn't have to be perfect. You'll tire of the project if you try to gold plate everything. Just aim for a good, solid trail truck.

What is a Volkswagon Beetle Flower Holder?

Something gay.

And you probably didn't think people read posts.

I know you are pretty set on an 09 but Coolerman probably has some 08 and 07 models for sale, but they are powdercoated.

Pace yourself, set realistic goals for each weekend.

You will and everybody else does get burned out when things are not coming along fast enough. You ahve a two year deadline on yourself. Make yourself a goal to have it together and running by thanksgiving. You can then do the 4link, etc.

I got frustrated with my FJ 40.5 and built a Tow Rig. I went back to work on my Fj40.5 and got frustrated with the 2F for the final time and now it has a Cummins 4BTA. I plan on wheeling it 4th of July weekend.

How's the progress, Mike?

Todd.

Thanks D' There is always something happening in my life so my realistic goal is summer 2011... but I will work on it as much as I possibly can... trust me. I would love to have it running good by thanksgiving. Lots of good stuff... thanks.

How's the progress, Mike?

Todd.

Im on the Vineyard for another 5 weeks.... won't be able to continue for another 5 weeks.... thanks for checkin in Todd.

Sold the 62 so I'm looking for a set of 60/62 axles right now.

Caught a Nice Striper ... about a 25lb one off of the beach in Chappiquiddick a week ago. There were tons of blues running too.

Got in last night late and got my cruiser fix by cleaning out the garage and pulling "rerun's" body off. Pushed the rolling chassis to the back yard and will be selling it soon with chia's tub and junk.

I was glad to see that the new 4 link control arms were here when I got back... that and the FJ60 Truss for the 60 axles. Tucked them all away for a rainy day. A friend Aaron is going to swing up with his welder and we will go to town on the spring over and rear 4 link in a few weeks / Month as soon as I get all the body junk sorted out (figure out what I really want to do).

Here are some pictures.

and the last few.

My son had fun today. Lost his first tooth and took off a few bolts on the frame. Good times.

I needed more room so I move about 30 crates to the barn. That thing is chock full o cruiser.

Pulled the engine and started cleaning up the frame. The tranny/transfercase support had 1 bolt in in... no nut... just gravity holding it there.

I shake my head at the PO.

Now I'll have to take the front and rear frame bumper supports out... they are both trash. Also think the PS is a Scout box bummer there. I need to think of what to do for PS now. Use the existing (re-weld) or go a different route. check out the welds the PO popped in...:eek::eek::doh: It all needs to be ground out.

I'm almost in new territory... putting something together. After I get the front end unbolted and the bumper supports pulled I'll grind all the hack welds down and send the frame to the sandblaster so I have something clean to work with.

.
I'll be selling the complete PTO for $650 - 1 tab is broken and there are some welds on the front bracket that I will be grinding off.

Its slow going - Mainly worked on them during my lunch hours this week when I could... so about 2 hours in.

Ordered some frame bushings $100

Now I'm just grinding the frame ends off of the donor frame and swapping them over to Chias. Tomorrow will be a ton of grinding and wire wheeling.

What's killin your budget is the Metal Tech this & that, Proffitt link kit (BOLT ONS).
Get yourself a bender & DIY.
I couldn't make out if you had a Scout Box, but it'll be 2X better than any LC box. Port it for hydro-assist cuz you'll want to run, at least 37" tires w/ an SOA  / linked rear.
What are your plans for gearing?

Right now its FJ62 axles so 4.10. What do you recommend?
