Chicago

Cool Chicago, thanks for tuning in to this parter on his first build that will be seen to completion.

Update:

I've thrown a bunch of junk in the back of the truck for blasting... I helped a friend move this weekend so I missed my window for dropping the parts off. Next saturday I'll drop the parts off.

In the meantime I've completed the restoration of one of my John Deer 265's. I'll throw a picture up to keep this thread alive. I guess its part of the build as it hauls crap back and forth from the back 40

Update - My wife took about 100 parts to the blasters. Should be done by this weekend. Will be primed. Body will go next, then frame. Need to do it in increments due to time constraints. Don't want anything flash rusting on me.

Sourced some 60 Axles. I really need advice on an engine / tranny setup. The 350 pointiac runs great 1972 I think... but maybe I should go 350 Chev... or Vortec with computer junk.

Parts are done - 72 parts for $400 blasted clean. Going to pick them up tonight and start putting them in Primer.

Change of Plan, he's going to drop the parts off tomorrow and pick up the Frame. I'm going to be very busy priming all this stuff in the next few days.

A nice part showed up today too. 80 Series Master and Booster.

I LOVE primer color!:p
Im going the Vortec/ 4L60E route with my 40. I think it will be a nice set up once I FIT the gear under the rig.
Im still amassing parts and trying to decide on the harness and which to go with.
Stuff gets expensive REALLY quick.:bang::crybaby:

Just out of curiosity...how hard was it to pull the tub off the frame?
Im just crackin into some of the "dark spaces" and im getting the feeling that I might wanna do a frame off for piece of mine, if for nothing else.
Im kinda anal that way.

How much for the sandblast of the parts?

Nice, which Vortec are you thinking of going with? 4.3? From what I've read, seems that its very close to a 350.

The parts cost $400 to blast. I could only spray 1 coat of primer on half of them last night. Still have about 30-40 parts to hit.

Getting the body off is pretty easy if you have a saws-all and are going to replace the body mounts. The worse area (from taking 3 bodys off 40's) is the rear bolts above the bumper support. Just stick your sawsall in there in go to cut those out. The rest normally come out... sometimes snapping a bolt. Its 30-40 year bolts. Hope that helps. It is pretty easy to get the broken bolts out when you have the tub on its side.

You do realize you have a ton of "extras" in your pile of waiting to blast/blasted/ready to prime pile of stuff right?

Keep up the progress.

Yes, they will be for sale as soon as I finish the batch. Its the only way I can fund this project.

Looking good Mikesta! Need to come up and check it out... keep me posted for when your ready to burn some metal :D BTW my plasma is the best purchase I have made it drastically cut time off of every project! I remember when I used to drill and punch those rivits- 1/2hr at least each! Now, plasma- 15 seconds and no need for a bunch of bits! Keep me posted bro! Aaron

Yeup!
That helps!
Thanks.
One of the PO's had cut and replaced that rear rust section, so Ill have to grind some welds out.
I really like your idea of using the moving dollys to park your tub on. I might have to steal that idea.
Im working in a 3 car garage, and I CAN NOT take up my wifes beloved parking space...there will be HELL TO PAY!:D

Not really, she's about as excited about this project as I am.

Look forward to the progress my friend.

Located and purchased the 60 axles for Chia.

There was a bunch of Junk surrounding them that need to be removed first. Spent about 3 hours removing junk today.

Also dropped the 40 frame at the blasters.

Aaron, are you avail next weekend to help mock up the 4 link? Could definitely use your expertise.

Finished up with the Body. Cut it up and loaded it for the metal recyclers.. The body was full of bondo... quarters look ok, but it was actually bondo'd.

60 Frame looks awesome. Also got a splitcase out of the truck. Might use it with Chia's build.

Pictures to prove I'm not just sitting around drinking beer.

I worked it out with my blaster... he will blast on friday, I will pickup the 40 frame on Saturday. I hope to put it in primer and begin mockup of the 4 link or start the cut and turn.

I was done for the weekend, but went outside to tidy up and accidently found a 19mm socket in my hand. The shackes came out so easy... almost like they had just been put in. It was a first. Usually I grenade them banging them out.

Dropped the rear axle.... and got it mocked up for the rear truss.

Its 1/4 lb lighter now... before I add the truss. Honestly didn't think I'd get this far, considering I just got the truck yesterday at 1pm.

Clean axle - Funny how they have dropletts of metal all over. Ground them all down as well for a snug fit.

cool man. Its nice to have a pile to pull from eh?

Tonight after work I took that truck load of body to the recycler. $50.78 is profit from it so I'll update the running profits

Got tired of walking around the frame so after I got back and wrestled with my kids for an hour, went out to the garage and quickly pulled the axles.

Threw the frame in the back of the truck and hauled it to my "Pile" in the back yard.

Put the axles on jackstands and closed the garage for the night. You'll notice that I have a spare front axle for my cut and turn trial. Hope I don't need it.

Little by little it gets done. I'm starting to think more of the drive train. It would be cool to have a 3FE in there with a 5spd. More expensive, but I'd love to keep it toyota if possible... just toying with the Idea.

Hope to put the rest of the parts in primer before I pick up the frame Saturday.

Now I need to jump back on my work computer and get a few more hours in. Breaks over.
