I have a '74 pig with a 3 speed. I was wondering if the 4 speed was an option prior to '75 or if it did it not come until the 2F engine.

A four speed can be retrofitted to ANY year piggy.

my 12/'74 Pig came with the 4 speed.

question I have is; do you need to change the bell housing to get the four speed to work with an early pig?....f engine prior to 74?...........all 74s I have seen have 4 speeds.......is this true for all 74s

A four speed needs a different bellhousing to a three speed as far as I know.

thanks Charles, I had a suspicion that was the case on the 3 speed to 4 speed conversion....but it is good to have a confirmation :)

If you have the F engine, you will need the special F bell housing for the four speed that was only available in 1974. Sometimes, they can be hard to find.

FYI, the 4 speed will not allow you faster highway speeds as the top gear ratios in the 4 speeds and the 3 speeds are the same. The only advantage of the speed is that it has a lower first gear and you get to split the gears up a little.

Personally, I would run your F engine and the 3 speed. Throw in 2F/4 speed combo at a later date.

X2; the final drive is the same both in the 3 and the 4 speed!; in the past quite a few prefered the 3 on the tree as the front bench could carry 3 people more comfortably

Watchya talkin' bout' Willis? The bolt pattern on the engine side is the same on both 3spd and 4spd transmissions, the pattern on the trans side differs. Cruisers didn't see engine side bell housing patterns change until the 1980s.

Whoops, my bad, I was smokin' crack again. I was thinking about the transitional gear that was found on the 74's with the F engine/4 speed tranny/3 speed t-case.

I should really not be posting and drinking.

If anybody needs the floor-shift (4 speed) transmission hump, I have it. I am looking for a three-on-the-tree hump, not sure what the hell the PO was thinking when they swapped them out. Sale or trade, preferably trade.

Brian, pretty sure I have a 3 on the tree hump in my stash........can't get to my stash till after the new year; will let you know.....

there are 3 diffenert styles of hump, the tops are the same shape, it's where they meet the floor panel. so using a 4 speed hump in a 69 won't seal very well as it does not sit flat on the floor.
I'll see if I can dig up those pics.
1st is a 1970
2nd is a 76?
3rd is 76 ontop of the 70

Gotcha. Yeah, I need a 1970 one then. With a little fab work the 4 speed can be sealed up though. In case anybody is interested. Thanks for the info, those pics are very beneficial.

can't find the pics with all 3. I think the splits were, early-column shift, early 70's 3 speed floor shift, late 4 speed
I think I sold my 3 speed floor shift one, I've got a 3 speed column shift one.

IMO better to go with the column shift tranny hump if one is a available........I have had them both side by side and there is a lot of differences in the curving......as you can see in the pix one will not fit over the other very well and it is not only a matter of the openings for the shifter but a contour problem as I remember................when I was in Central America and these pigs were workhorses the column shift was very desirable as they could seat 3 adults on the front bench; check with3_puppies, he is a lot closer to you and might be willing to let the tranny hump go:D

in addition to lower gearing with the 4spd, it is considerably quieter than the 3spd.
