3 on the tree. PLEASE HELP

Thanks for the picture it is a lot better than my drawing. :D. It is the very top piece that came unscrewed from the steering wheel plate. By the picture it looks like there is a pin that goes into it. I will have to check this out. I have never considered switching to a floor shifter. I have always driven a manual however, this is the first three on the tree I have driven and I love it. I am definately going to keep it just have to get it fixed :'(. It is dark and cold when I get home to my MN home so I will look at it closer later this week. Thanks again for all the help. This board is great. The thing that makes it so great is the people on it. I mean when you stop and think it would be nothing without great folks like you posting replies. My question would be posted and no one response and I am just sitting here with my thumb up my ass trying to get it into reverse. :D Thanks to all of you.
 
Anyone have a C&B Manual for sale? Or know where I can get one? Looks like it will be my new bible. Still need to get the Haynes from AutoZone.
 
Ok guys. I got the pin out of the shifter arm so all is well there. Now how do I get the very top peice to come loose. I do not know if mine is welded or if it is so rusted it is not releasing but I can not get the very top peice with the threads to spring loose. It is still connected to the L shaped piece. Any ideas??? Thank you and happy thanksgiving.
 
I love my 3 on the tree set up. There is a lot less cluter up front. Everyone asks were the shifter is, I think that it is a good theft deterent. The thief would have to figure out how to drive the cruiser first before he could make his very slow getaway. :D
 
3 on the tree- FIX IT...

If you are going to keep the three speed, keep the column shift... One thing you should consider is getting a key-sert, much like a heli coil, It goes where the threaded piece connects under the steering wheel. I did this on a rig and they are made out of steel, they are tough to find but a good fastener store should be able to get the right pitch and diameter for you, once you do this you will keep from wearing out the pot metal collar that the threaded piece goes into.

Does it "spring" when you push on it? Or is it just immobile?
 
It is just immobile. I think it is so rusted that it is not able to "spring". I am taking apart my parts set up and not the actual shifter on my cruiser yet. Wanted to figure it out first without the hassel of steering column, immobile, ect. This one I cut the column and I think I am going to soak it so it loosens up and hopefully "springs". I pulled this one out of my parts cruiser in case my threads were stripped. Did not know about the key-sert set up. :doh:
