Hi Matt-

Looking good... speaking of the under coating it was under everything on the 40 also... was that stock or do you think that guy put it on there... I believe that is why the floor pans and fenders are in suck good shape on that truck also...

Arron,

I don't think it was stock, it was pretty crudely installed. I'm kinda doubting the guy I bought it from was the one who installed it......he didn't seem like the type of guy to try that hard. ;)

Pretty good night on the lpb, about 2.5 hours. I'll let the pics do most of the talking since I took a lot.

First I made brace's on each side from the B pillar to the A pillar. Bolted a 1/8" plate where the striker goes and the hinge stop goes. I then welded a piece of 3/4" sqare stock between them on both sides. I'm going to be getting a little aggresive around the rockers and A pillar, so just making sure nothing moves.

Since I haven't done much metal work in about a year I thought I would warm up on an easy spot. Little rust spot, dead center on the bottom of the rear of the cab. Cut it out, welded back in.....done.

Then I just moved to the closest thing, left rear quarter panel. Marked off what I wanted out with the sharpie, gone. I took the scrap piece and flattened it out to make the exact same length of piece. Cut it in the shear and broke 2 sides of it at 90. Then sliced the 1 side every 1/2" so I could make the bend. Pics should say it all.....I think it turned out absolutley awesome, it is amazingly straight on the outside. Should take a few coats of ureathane primer, but that should be all I need to sand out.

Pulled a floor support where it had rotted through, but it was getting late. So marked off what I'm going to cut out, which isn't much, and start again tomorrow night.

Hoping to get that floor piece done and then I'm planning on moving into the left A pillar/floor area. Bad spot and just want to tackle it and get it taken care of.

Matt

I don't know about, "the man", but I am extremely please how well the first night of sheet metal work went. :)

I can run my hand over that and you can't feel a wave in it, just the scratches from the flap disc. It should turn out very nice once the priming and sanding starts.

Thanks, Matt

Hey Matt, what do you use to cut the old metal out?

Great to see the rust holes disappear! Keep it up!

When you finish up this one can I drop off my 40 tub?? :D

I was going to ask exactly the same question - in addition to a few more.

When you put a patch in, do you back it w/ brass to keep it from burning through?

IIRC, you are using a Hobart 135 (or equivalent) to weld - what size wire are you running?

What wire speed

What heat level?

Thanks, great work and really glad that you found a LPB.

I cannot belive I just found this thread. I pretty much stopped visiting the 45 section since there haven't been daily updates for the LWB for awhile now. I am so glad you started another project. I learned a ton from your last one. You are a true master of metal work.

Thank you.
