In the garage.
I have an 83' with a 2F, it has a dead cylinder. #3 to be exact. No compression. I don't smell fuel in the oil. It's not blowing air out the oil fill cap, the PCV port, dipstick tube, or out the carb. Only out the exhaust pipe it makes a sputter sound & will suck a piece of cardboard back to the pipe. This has to be a valve issue correct?

I'm one heck of a parts changer, but not that good at diagnosis. Before I pull the head I wanna be sure thats the next step.

Also whats the best source for the head gasket kit I'll need. Any input will be a great help. Thanks.

Based upon the law of averages, I say you are spot-on calling out the bad exh. valve. There is a remote possibility that particular cam lobe is wiped out, however. As far as the HG, well the most common response I read is OEM Toy. Give Cdan a call.

Take the valve cover off yet? Might be a dead give away once you get that off.

Maybe the last time somebody did the valve adjustment they got one too tight. Of course, the valves probably toast now anyway.

haha i have no compression on #3 as well. guess we can start a "cool" club.

I did fail to mention that I already adjusted the valves. And with the valve cover off (and coil wire removed) I cranked the engine and watched all rockers move , and they all seemed to be moving the same.

So it looks like I'll be pulling the head , wont I?.

I will be glad to start a new "cool" club. However if all goes well my membership will be short lived.

Put the coil wire back on and run the engine with the cover off...

Watch what is going on.

Oil will not spray everywhere at ide, or at 1500rpms.

Ok, stupid questions time, but what should I be looking for? Seriously, I don't know. Look for all to raise & drop the same,?, a sequence thing,?, A twist? A spring issue? Or just observe & try to learn something?

You could get really techy and use a dial indicator on each rocker, but I think you know you have a fried valve. Yank the head. Now would be a good time to have .035 or .040 shaved off that sucker for a little more poop. Do not use anything other than Toyota gaskets. I have seen a total of three after market gaskets and all three had the holes in the wrong places. Not good. I caught two of them, my friend installed the third without noticing and almost ruined a new motor.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I shall begin the tear down. I like the mill it down idea....more power! Tony.

hope your's doesn't look like this one

WOW!

At fiirst guess I would say wrong sparkplug or heavy carbon buildup causing detonation.

I bought it that way a few years ago, the engine is still in the shop. sitting on the floor looking sad. The comp. on the rest is great 145-150. 0 on that one.

No idea what happened, they just had a newer head installed. I have the receipts.

I still haven't had a chance to tear it down, but I also hope it doesn't look like that pic. I will most likely get it torn into this next week. Thanks again for all the info.

I second the comment about getting the toyota gasket. It has copper crush washers which work much better than the aftermarket one.

Don't mean to hijack but what would you find if you checked the valves... what does a bad exhaust valvle look like from up top?

Heh. I have a dead 440 that had that problem start the chain reaction. Had enough carbon on it to bump compression over 12:1 on a truck block. It eventually shot a hole through a piston, and only runs on seven cylinders now. good thing the muscle car craze hasn't made big block mopar stuff crazy expensive. :bang:

Moral of the story: carbon bad. detonation bad.

I finally got her tore down & the # 3 cylinder exh. valve was toast. All else looked great though. Takin Lehiguys' advice & millin the head .035. Got my valve & gasket set ordered from Toyota. Just a note the entire engine rebuild gasket set was only $40.00 more than the head gasket set. Now I can re-seal the entire engine while it's down. No more Exxon Valdiz in the garage.
