Opened up my engine last week & found the cause...no wonder compression for cyl#4 was <20psi...Also, can't really see it with the rust, but cyls 4 & 5 are scratched.

I was thinking a V8 conversion, but for lack of $$$, I think I just gonna try to rebuild my 2F.

What is the cheapest way to get the 2f rebuilt or should I just try to buy a used somewhere?

Thanks,

Meatloaf

The cheapest rebuild is one that involves your labor. If you're able to tear it down and deliver the block to a machine shop, you might squeak by for $1500-$2000. If you want to do half the job, (new pistons and rings) it'd be less but then it'd be only half done. The more common fix is to find a used engine. It all depends on what your goal is.

Looks kinda rough Meatloaf. I would think about a used short block, and bolt all my goodies to it. An entire used motor is gonna cost less than a rebuild.

haven't seen something like that since my rod went through the cylinder head of my YZ racing bike years ago.

Any recommendations for a source to find a good used engine? Preferrably here in Texas.

Thanks!

A new OEM short block goes for about $1500.
Not sure whats needed to get your head rebuilt??? Just a valve job?

Anybody seen a new Cruiser engine in the US recently? I heard they were discontinued. Can anybody (CDan?) get us a PN and list price? $1500 would be fair, especially if one has a bottom end w/ worn oil pump, cam gear, torn up crankshaft, fried cam & lifters, knocking rod and scuffed cylinders. Rebuilding a *really* worn engine can be xpensive.

I don't know.
SHORT BLOCK, Land Cruiser - 6 CYLINDER, INLINE 84-87 $1,956.77 $1,526.28
Includes: Block, Pistons & Rings, Connecting Rods & Bearings, Crankshaft And Main Bearings.

cruiserparts.net has some used 2F, but they are not in Texas of course.
if you are looking for a new 2F, then good luck......

*If* you do rebuild the 2F ...

I hope it doesn't become ... "I could have had a V8 ..." kinda remorse.

People that have rebuilt many a 2F suggest letting the machine shop order your parts. You can also call Paclift. Its a forklift shop out in Cali. that has engine rebuild kits for F motors. They are Toyota parts but arent branded automotive so the cost is alot less.

BTW, how many miles were on the motor?

So what does that to the pistons? Lean running from a manifold leak? Detonation?

I'd love to do the V8/5 speed swap, but it sounds too complicated (I am not a mechanic), and since I want to do it myself...

motor had 176,000 miles on it...

V8 remorse...not exactely.

My story is a 2F nightmare....and I only offer it up because these landcruisers are expensive when major components break. Used parts are really not all that reliable when you are talking about high wear parts. Used doors ok, but used motors....I am now a disbeliever.

I bought my 60 1.5yrs ago knowing that thew white smoke coming out the back was at least a headgasket failure. I had a mechanic pull the head. The problem wasn't a headgasket, but rather a cracked head. I bought a used head from cruiserparts.net for $350 and had it rebuilt by a reputable machine shop ($250) and all gaskets replaced, reinstalled. Total costs was something like $1000 bucks to get it running. It lasted about 1500 miles, before failing.

Instead of doing a second headjob, I went the used engine route. I picked up a used 2F motor (80k, great compression) from toycruiser.com for $650 and had it installed by a shade tree cruiserhead. New gaskets, odd parts, etc. cost $500. Total install costs on the new motor....$1150.

The motor ran hot from startup, despite new hoses, radiator, flushing, etc. Coolant was being lost from somewhere. Compression checks were good. It turns out I have a cracked short block. I am at the point of having WAY too much tied up in this rig to contemplate getting rid of it. I have to fix this one. At this point I am looking to a welder to see if he can seal up that crack and get me on the road. See my other posts.

My rig has been broken longer than it has ever been driven. So....V8 remorse....I don't know. I just wish I had better luck. At this point, I have learned a ton about trucks. I just wish I started the lessons with a rusty ford 150 before losing my shirt with a toyota.

YES, USED 2F engines are availble. If I was to do it again, and couldn't do the work myself, I would NOT recommend paying to have headgaskets replaced, heads rebuilt, or shortblocks swapped. I would pay instead to have a used 2F installed....AFTER inspecting the used part in a vehicle while it was running. If you have to buy an engine that can't be inspected, then do a conversion or buy a new rig in better shape.

Or spend $200 on an an engine crane, buy a good set of rachets, extensions, wobble extensions, torque wrench, carb cleaner, the FSM and take 10 days off of work to do it yourself.

My two cents....cause I've not been blessed, yet, but the cruisergods.

Meatloaf. I'm about to do a V8 swap on a tight budget. I've ordered most of the misc parts and just need to finish chasing down the leads to pick the best motor. I'm expecting to spend just under $3000 and I have freed up the first full week of march to do the majority of the work. I'll post up exact costs and a difficulty rating.

If that helps at all...
Chris

Thanks Doughboy...keep me posted. I hope to have mine running by the start of the summer.

heres a thought....instead of throw down 3000 bills for a new engine...just get another cruiser...and keep the other for parts....just a thought tho...a new engine does sound nice....
