3.0L swap

"best" is always subjective.
Best, as in easiest will always be a 22R series. You'd end up with about the same power as the 3.slow, but better economy, more bottom-end torque (a 3VZ is comparable to a 22R without the stroke), and greater reliability.

Best, as in overall improvment would be the 5VZ-FE (3,4), which is a very good motor, but will always be the most expensive option.

Another option is the 3RZ, which is the younger cousin of the 22R, it's just as reliable, but quieter, smoother, more powerful, and more efficient.

If you ask me: run your 3VZ until it dies, then contemplate the swap. As derided as the 3.0 is, it is a good motor overall, and there are those on this board who will share their opinions.

good luck!

Id never swap a 3.0 to a 22re

when mine blows...quits...falls out w/e

its getting a 1jz

I wouldn't do a 1JZ swap. I did alot of research, and decided that such a swap would be ideal in a road-only truck, but offroad, it doesn't have enough stroke - M, J series motors are essentially really big motorcycle motors, fast-moving, limited throw, deep cams, they don't offer the kind of bottom-end power needed on the trails.

If it would fit, I think a 2FE (3FE head, 2F block) would be a really cool I6 swap for a truck - tons of bottom-end power, refinement for passable highway driving, and LOADs of torque:steer:

Operative word with an F-series engine. They are HEAVY. Besides, they won't fit, too long.

very, very true. Plus, except for the 1FZ there has never been an F-series motor that took to smog laws.

Have to disagree here.

22re will require new transmission, new motormounts welded to frame, new fuel, new wiring harness, new drive shafts, new tcase crossmember. It's actually a very complex swap to go from 3.0 to 22re - way more than a 3.4

The 1jz has (71.5 mm = 2.81") no stroke?

But you will look good shifting your truck @ 6,000rpm...

Lol, lop two cylinders off and put a 3.5" stroker in it:grinpimp:

There's a guy around my area I've talked to about this swap (3.0L to a 3.4L). He works at the local Toyota dealer and has had a couple pretty sweet trucks that he has swapped engines in. He did have an '87 4runner that the 22RE died in and he swapped a 3.4L into. Then got tired of that and swapped it into a '92 ext. cab pickup. He used a harness from a base model Tacoma with a 3.4, 5-speed and adapted it to work. With the base model harness you don't have to fool with electric door locks, electric windows, etc. The 3.4L sits right into the stock 3.0L mounts. He raised the mounts on his just to help get the drive train up a little, but you could use the mounts in the stock location. It came out pretty sweet and what a fun truck to drive with that 3.4L. Definitely the direction I'd go once the 22RE in my '89 4Runner dies.

I thought the same thing 2ndGen... But TheFatKid(?) said he didnt have to do any of that?

I remember b/c I read in Petersen's or somewhere you had to do a BL or hood scoop...

Oh well... I guess when I do one I'll find out:D

...stupid lottery

Hey guys I have a question? What is the best engine to swap too? The 3.4L 0r the 22re?

ok, just what... what year, make and model are you driving now?

When I do go to the 3.4L i think i will do a hood scoop instead of a BL because im going to put 2" OME suspension in and I just want to run 31x10.50 goodyear duratracs and if I do a BL it would make the tires look way to small. I know some people be like u r stupid put 33's on. but im fine with 31's

I did a 3.4 swap in my truck. It was actually no too bad. My 3vz was still running, so I sold it for $800 to recoup some money. I completely rebuilt my 3.4 down to new OEM bearings, and spent right around $1200 doing so. If you find a 3.4 in good condition, that is not necessary. Rerouting the exhaust and the wiring were the hardest parts for me, but there is plenty of wiring diagrams and info from people who have done the swap it is very simple. The 3.4 bolts to the same mounts, and I did not have to cut my hood nor did use a body lift. I did however raise my hood about an inch off the hinges long before the swap as a "fake cowl" which helps airflow through the engine bay. This helped my overheating problem with my old radiator.

Search different forums like TTORA, YotaTech, and Pirate, especially YotaTech. There is a whole section devoted to 3.4 swaps on there.

I bought the motor on craigslist for $400 with a stripped sparkplug hole. I then found my 5 speed harness and ecu on craigslist too from a guy parting out a 4runner. Paid $100 for both.
