2FE into a 60

I'm not scared to do it--I just wanna see it done again:D

Anybody desmog when doing the conversion or are ya'll just adding everything? I'm completely desmogged on my 2F and would prefer to not add crap back if I could help it.

I'll echo what Pappy said. Just dig in and learn while you did it. Before I built mine, the most intense engine work I had done previously was valve adjustments and a pan gasket. Get the 3FE or 62 FSM and the 60 FSM if it's going in a 60 and go.

If you are going to freshen the engine while you are at it, there are lots of good threads here on mud to steer you in the right direction. Working on Dean's will be a bit more learning for me, since mine went in a 62 and I didn't have to work with wiring or fuel system. It will be good experience through, as I hope to get a 3FE or 2FE dropped into a project 55 I have in the next year and that will require the wiring and fuel system work too.

Desmog it while you have easy access to everything. I did on my 3FE40 conversion. Pappy's write up is well documented and is a great place to start the journey.

Mine is non-smogged too.

Definitely desmog if you can legally do it in your county/state. Doc that RockDoc is talking about is in my FJ6X stuff download link in my sig.

No EGR. No smog pump.

Kept charcoal canister, and the PCV.

Just put in my order for new vacuum line and desmog kit from JimC, minus the pulley. Hope to have it soon so I can get mine desmogged! Going to be gutting my smog pump to take place of the pulley.

Okay, we pulled the engine, got it mounted onto the stand, got the head and clutch off and sent the flywheel in to be ground. Put the 3FE head into it and noticed a few things that needed to be changed.

a pic of the 2F block with the head off.

2F with the 3FE head and the original 2F lift hooks. The one on the back will have to be moved to the front because the 3FE arrangement won't work. My truck was a US model and had the power steering pump on the top driver's side. Under that was the air pump. I moved the rear hook to the front and then there is a smaller one that mounts the fuel line on the 3FE across the back of the head.

This shot is of the lift hook where the fuel lines mount on the back of the head.

I also cut the threads off the air injection fittings and welded the ends to close off the ports.

Very nice dude.. looks like it is turning into a fun little project. Really wish I had the time/money to do something like this..

just realized the last 2 pics didn't attach. Here they are! The last one is a shot of the air injection nozzles that I had to weld closed. The plugs I got had heads that were too large to screw into the ports, so this was my alternative.

Also will be away for the next 12 days on a job, but I will continue when I get back!!

Apparently I have dirty hands too.

It has only taken me a month to get through a couple fo jobs, Christmas and New Years and finally got my correct intake manifold gasket. So this afternoon I got to spend a bit of time on the engine.

I got the intake and exhaust manifolds on, got the fuel rail and fuel injectors mounted and got the wiring harness mostly on. I also got the fuel lines mounted, both the pressure (supply) and the return. I have to fiddle with them a bit as the supply is also really close to the PVC valve that is on the 2F, as I kept it and the 2F valve cover.

I also put the 3FE coolant lines on the top of the engine and found that they will be able to work really well with the stock lines in the truck. I guess mine being a late 85, it was already being fitted with the lines that were to be used with the 62 series, so I have an extension hose running from the solid coolant lines on the firewall, to where it had to connected to the 2F head close to the rear on the drivers side. Just have to remove that and connect the short ones on the engine!

I also found a plug at a hose and fittings store that is the same threads as the one used on the EGR line on the front exhaust manifold, so I plugged that off. Now after removing the EGR itself from the top intake, I just have to make a plate and cover that hole up with a new gasket.

These two pics show the front of the engine with the fuel return and the upper intake with the EGR removed. After I get the cover plate made and this cleaned up a bit, I can mount it and I will post it all connected, wired etc.

still need to figure out what to do with the collant line at the front. I think I need to get a cap to block off one of the ports on the thermostat housing and how to connect the one line that is too small to connect to the larger port on the water pump.

I was so nice to have a donor vehicle and everything I pulled off, wires - vacuum lines - fuel lines etc, all just fell back into place. There has been very few issues in trying to figure out where all this stuff had to go.

I will get an engine hoist next week when I'm back from another road trip and get the bell housing on after the top end is done, then the newly ground flywheel and new clutch and get this all back into the truck.

More pics to follow.

So I had a small piece of 1/8" sheet in the shop and after a few minutes with an angle grinder, rotary grinder, file and drill, I had a plate to block off the port for the EGR valve.

I fitted the top part of the intake and connected all the harness plugs I could find. I have started working on routing the vacuum lines, and things like that, but will probably have to wait until it all gets put back into the truck to figure that out completely. So far it has a lot easier than I thought. There is just a few things I am worrying about and that has to do with the ECM and connecting that up.

When I was parting out the 62 I got to do this, I forgot to get the main plug off the harness that was left in the truck. I have the motor harness, but now need to hunt one of those down.

When i was connecting the harness plugs, my son Spencer noticed that one that went to the thermostat housing had an exposed wire. Of course I had to have a better look and when I turned it, the wire broke off. Anyone know if I can get another at Toyota with a pigtail, or am I going to have to go scavenging at a wrecker?

here are the pics that didn't attach for some reason.

By the way, Pappy, your manual on your conversion is like a bible!! Thanks for all the work you put into that.
