Did anybody ever figure out what this is ?
mine has been doing it for a couple months now ....audible pop, then the sound will go off for a few minutes then pop back on

When the sound is lost, do you still hear the audible beep when switching between menu items? If not, this is likely your amp.

In my case if I use the scan tuning feature it will find a station that comes in clearly, usually in a foreign language but with an obviously stronger signal. :(

I'm still having this dang issue! Do I remember correctly that someone figured out it was something to do with the navigation system?

Same issue. 2015 LC. No sound or volume level display on head unit.
Fuses good.
Pulling the TV fuse in passenger kick panel resets the system so I have power to that point.
Remote won’t open or close ceiling DVD player. I’m thinking either no power to DVD or DVD is the the bad link in the system. I’ve never used the rear entertainment system since I’ve owned it.
Diagnostic trouble code VTR/FR rear.
Any thought from electronic wizards?

How do you get to that diagnostic menu?

So I verified that I had power to the rear overhead screen. Next I have a friend with a 2013. My remote would operate its screen so I knew my remote was good. Lastly,
I switched in the screen from the 2013 and my sound came back. So my screen is bad and it’s causing no sound from the speakers.
A new screen from Toyota is 5k so I’m not going that route. Very few used units around in the 1-2k range. I’m going to call a few repair shops and see if they think they can fix it.

Any update on this, skeet? Were you successful? I have never used the rear screens. I dont have a spare screen laying around, any thoughts on how to test this another way?

I got a used rear screen unit from a wreck and it fixed my issue. There is a wiring work around in this tread or another on here that will cost less than a dollar but you won't have use of the screen.
