you pick the size and model yet? are you moving to 17" or 18" rims?
Nope on model but I want to go for 34 inches (as big as possible without needing to cut body mount for clearance). I will really dig in this month and research different models. I want something sturdy (so I don’t puncture it) with good grip for climbing obstacles. As far as looks go I really love the Toyo MTs but not sure how practical they will be.

Been even considering keeping the 20s to save $$ on rims. I forgot who but maybe it was @TeCKis300 that made the argument for 20s/currently run stock size rims?

It's going to depend on how one wants to use and tailor their rig. My preference is for maximum bandwidth. Meaning I would like it to perform as good as it can in every use case, rather than compromising for better in a narrow use. So while I do want it to be awesome off-road, I'm not willing to give up handling and on road performance too much where it spends most of its time. Specific to my use, because I tow at the upper end of the spectrum, I really need it to tow well with safety as a priority. 20s can help in that respect with better lateral stability and resistance to sway.

If our rigs were limited to 33s or less, sure, smaller wheels for more sidewall. But because our rigs can fit larger 33s, 34s, and 35s, there's still plenty of sidewall to be had with 20s. More than enough for an all rounder rig that's not a dedicated off-roader or rock crawler. She rides like a pillow at 15 PSI off-road in gnarly corrugations.

That's my opinion at least and what works for me.

Less words, more pictures?

^ Nice picture. To think mine will look like that soon!!!

My biggest thing is that I can justify asking my parents for tires but it will be more difficult to explain going down to smaller rims xD; that’s more of a personal want than a necessity in their book. I’m lucky to have them cover all my necessities and really don’t want to push it, even if I know they’ll be okay with it. Hell they were even cool with the idea of a pop top bed on the roof, knowing they can get quite expensive

I may not salivate as much when looking at stock vs some RWs at the moment (I do love the look of smaller rims and bigger sidewalls, as well as the better grip for off road), but I still definitely salivate and definitely have considered that the rock warriors are something I’ll grow out of. Perfect offset, great reliability, resale and looks aside, maybe I just like to be able to say I have some Rock Warriors. If I still like them when the first set of 34s are done, then I’ll swap over then. That way I can experience both and see for myself.

I went ahead and got the hitch receiver with an 8 inch drop in anticipation of her sitting higher soon! It’s the one currently on her in picture above, and is a good fit even now before the extra clearance. Also, got a new 5 x 10 with 15 inch tires , jack and wooden floors/loading ramp, for $1050 out the door. The same one is 1500 before taxes at northern tools and that’s one of the cheaper places! Found the guy on Craigslist (I looked at a lot of places for the right trailer).

Wow. Tundra rims have gone way up since I last looked. I way paying $50 each, and got a set for free too. Now they’re 100$+ each, and not even with good tires.
weird.
nothing wrong with 20s.
I suggest you not go more than 34” if you’re not going to do gears.

Pretty sure you could pick up a set of 18" stock cruiser rims for reasonable money. I think I read that the '13-'15 are less costly than the '16+.

A bunch of us on 'mud probably have sets filling up their garage. Maybe someone local to you to save on shipping?

As I recall, tires are less expensive for smaller diameter rims too.

Another potential source is the Facebook marketplace (I got my Tundra TRD rims there).

Yeah Check marketplace, a year ago I got my tundra rims for I think $150- 4 rims w/ cheap but excellent condition tires.

No luck on tundra set on marketplace or Craigslist, but I did find these!

Seems like a solid deal and should be a fit for my stock 20s yeah?

I can pick those used tires up today let me know mud! We can be sitting on cheap 34s by tomorrow and save the $1500 I was planning on spending on Toyos on something else?

Would love your thoughts soon. Definitely not my dream tires but for 200 a set I will be sure to get my moneys worth/buy me time to properly research and source tires/rims.

I don't do used tires, too much rides on them (pun intended).

Check the build date on the tires. The tread depth looks like you could get about a year out of them, you want at least 8/32nd now.
The build date needs to be within 5 years, that way you can run them for 18 mths and still be within the 7 year period.

Remember you'll pay $20 per to get them mounted.

I ran used Duratracs for a year, they were fine. In this case it is literally YMMV.

I’ve been riding on used tires for past few vehicles, don’t think I’ve ever paid more than 200 per set. I’ve also never had a vehicle This nice and that’s the main reason for wanting new tires for her. From my experience though used tires have served me well. Hell I’m used to riding on 2 different models because it’s hard to find a matching set of 4 at a used tire place, so even this set is a step up.

Normally I go to used tire places and pick them out, and I have the lifetime alignment with Firestone to help reduce alignment costs from running older tires. This particular guy I have bought 1 set of rims from in the past and was very happy with it.

Seems like good beater tires to hold me off, at 200 a set even if it only lasts 10k miles I’d be happy. Also, I won’t go anywhere far until I get something with more peace of mind, but right now I’m thinking that I can afford the risk of running a used set since I will be close to home while I am on this set.

Am I missing something that can go horribly wrong with used tires? This particular set looks like it even has even wear.

that's the problem with used anything. They look fine in internet pictures, but maybe there are 20 plugs in those, who knows.

Yeah, two are worn more, two are worn less, It's hard to gauge the depth but there isn't a lot of bonus tread on those.

@grinchy is this it? Looks like 02/2015? So 6 years ago. Going to give it more thought but I’m still leaning towards grabbing them. So I’m looking at about $300 total including installation for about 1 year of use. That 1 year could be very insightful in terms of helping me decide the set that will be permanent rims with new tires?

6 years? In a pinch yes but i've read that 5 years is the oldest you should run due to rubber breaking down.
If you have the money to get new tires, in this case, buy new.

The good thing about this particular Craigslist seller is that I’ve bought from him before, and if something terribly wrong pops up I will just bring it right back to his shop and ask for a different set/refund. He takes his little shop very seriously and I don’t imagine he would want to stir up drama/ruin his rep over selling used tires on the side. Assuming the seller is legitimate and no big hidden surprises, is it worth the $300 for a year of mileage?

Another thing this allows me to do, and perhaps the most important, is that it gives me time to find smaller rims before picking tires. If I choose tires now and have my parents pay, I would have to go 20 inch diameter as I do not have smaller rims to accommodate. I don’t want to ask my parents for rims unless it’s hella cheap, so if I get the rims on my own then I can have my parents buy a new set of 17/18s instead of 20s. I only get one set from them every 50k miles or more, so maybe I should go smaller diameter for the first new set.

Do you need tires immediately? If you can wait a few days/week(s) i'm sure something will pop up, even if it is tundra steelies...

Well mud is saying no, and im not going to argue with the hive mind. Just wanted to share my reasons/thoughts for considering them.

Nope, just rare to see that exact size pop up. What are the chances a 34 inch 20 diameter tire pops up on Craigslist so I give them all consideration. Good to know about the 5 year rule!

Don't know how far you are from these places but these are on CL:
