I had an issue that a number of others are experiencing with their 100 series. Four out of six of my gauges worked only about 10% of the time. The rest of the time they were just dead. Research led me to believe that my stepper motors needed replacing. These are little "tomb-shaped" (black in color) motors that are soldered on to the circuit board behind the cluster. The motors look like this
Hello dchilds, so at the end of the day how did your repair work out. Are you gauges and dash working properly now. The later conversations in this thread about capacitors etc have me wondering about those also. My tacho and oil gauge work fine for a while then after 5 or 10 minutes are reading lower as though there is a current resistance feeding to them. Other times they don't work at all or one works and the other one doesn't. Sooooo confusing.
Thanks Noel

After some searching I finely found this thread. My engine temp gage went out for the first time yesterday then came back on later in the day. I didn't know there were "known" issues with the gauge cluster until now. You all seemed to be on the heals of the problem. I'm hoping someone has made progress. If it comes down to some faulty capacitors that would be pretty great.

I sold my rig a year and a half ago or so. They were working great at that point. I assume they are still going strong but can’t confirm with certainty.

Okay, thats good to hear. That was the motor replacement correct? You didn't need to replace any capacitors?

Dealing with a gauge issue here too.

This weekend my speedometer started acting erratic - showing that i was travelling MUCH faster than i actually was. When i parked, the gauge hung at the 40m mark. It dropped back down to 10m, but never lower. The problem is persisting.

I took it to a nearby Lexus dealership to get their opinion. I was hoping it was a computer thing. They're saying I need a whole new gauge cluster ($1600 plus labor). He wasn't able to tell me how that would affect my odometer.

Obviously that's crazy.

Any thoughts of guidance would be greatly appreciated. The rest of the gauges are working perfectly fine.

Should note: It's a 2004 LX with 96K miles. I'm based in Toronto, where it can be hard to find support for these vehicles.

A few pointers @Mall Cruiser
  • The mileage is stored in the cluster, so if you take a cluster from something other than your truck and swap it in you will need to have the milage manually set in the new cluster to match whatever is on your truck. I assume the dealer can do this, but if not third parties can.
  • Tanin rebuilds them, but hold on to your wallet.
  • You probably already figured this out, but 04-05 has its own cluster. Nothing newer or older will interchange to the best of my knowledge, for USDM vehicles anyways.
In terms of speculation, whatever Tanin does to rebuild the clusters is secret sauce at this point. The LC guys have replaced steppers and gotten good results, but it is a different cluster and to the best my knowledge nobody has found new steppers that fit the new 03+ LX clusters. I suspected caps, but ultimately caved to the Tanin extortion and sold the truck.

I still have my old cluster if someone wants to take a whack at coming up with a community sourced solution.

OP here; back in the 100 series game!

You're right on all fronts. My '04 LC was a relatively easy fix but I don't think the same applies to the LX crowd - of which I'm now a part. For the time being, my "new" '03 is all functioning perfectly (thank goodness).

How bad was your old cluster acting up?.. Mine is still pretty random but I can tell you it seems to be predominantly on the warmer days and even at that it probably only acts up about 10% of the time so as of now it’s more of an annoyance than a necessity to get fixed. If it acted up continuously ... and definitely not being an electronic wizard it would probably be easier to diagnose by replacing the capacitors one by one (assuming it is a capacitor which is where my vote is at with it too)..... would be nice to solve this issue cause it was one thing when Tanin did the fix for 599 but I heard it was much higher now so that’s a no bueno for me : /...

03 lx 470 ... (sorry haven’t figured out how to get this in my signature yet)

I just contacted Tanin and repair starts at $119 plus shipping but if a full rebuild is required it could cost $699 plus shipping. Current turn around is 7 business days. Once they figure out what is wrong with it they call with total cost and get approval before working on it. This is for a ‘05 LX

I still have tach and battery not working except for really humid, cool mornings they work or after I disconnect the battery to work on something else. 🤷 I agree and still think it’s the capacitors/resistors. I wish I knew more about soldering and electrical to take a stab at replacing those.

I bought a refurbished LX470 cluster from Tanin soon after I purchased the truck. I have no soldering skills. I would do more damage than fixing anything. I've been very satisfied with the Tanin cluster and the customer service. No complaints or regrets. I consider the Tanin cluster to be an asset.

My cluster's issues were limited to the tachometer. It worked perfectly until it didn't, and from then on it was at zero much more often than where it was supposed to be. And, occasionally it was active but inaccurate. You had a better shot at being pleasantly surprised if the weather was cool.

Regarding my interactions with Tanin, I am glad they are an option. I wish they were not the only ones.

My oil pressure gauge died over a year ago and I've just left it while casually looking for repair options. Tanin is expensive but my mechanic friend who solely works on very high end collectible vehicles old and new and race cars said that there is a guy in NC that he uses for all of his cluster repairs. I know the LX (what I have) has the backlit steppers that are apparently not available on the market for purchase but I'm going to call and ask them what they do to repair. The shop in NC that I'm going to talk to is Nichols Speedometer & Instruments - Speedometers, Tachographs, Service and Repair North Carolina - http://nsifleet.com/home.html

When I poked Tanin about the LX repairs, they mentioned that they disassemble the LX steppers and manually rebuild them with new internals to retain the backlit needle.

I've disassembled a stepper motor on an 01 LX and would not want to attempt to rebuild it. If you even LOOK at the weak spring that attaches to the needle, it deform. God bless folks who repair them for a living.

Keep us posted on the above company. I have a feeling I’ll be needing the services of Tanin or whom ever sooner or later but would be nice to know there may be a second option if needed.

Maybe I have read over it, but am I right that you can instal the PPE+PS 6S to all 6 positions? Or do the 4 position (oil temp etc.) really need the 6G?

I just found this thread, and I have the same issue on my 2004 LX470. my truck only has 150k miles and some of the gauges have become erratic.
Debating on attempting the repair myself vs. sending into Tanin.
Seems like the majority that have this issue have a 2004. interesting

Does anyone know where I can get a stepper motor for a 05 LX470? See attached picture.

If you have read through the threads, you will find the answer: impossible! Unless you can find/buy a used instrument cluster from a junk yard I guess.

Also, there were several motor swap cases for LX470 which confirmed the motor is not the culprit. You can confirm this by swapping a "good" and a "bad" motor.
