I left my truck at a shop for maintenance, which included replacement of a number of dash bulbs. Unfortunately, it appears they had tampered with the gauge cluster. I don’t get the backlighting.

Upon further inspection, the edges of the bezel looked like it had been cut out. It will be a pain to replace with an exact bezel let alone finding a matching gauge cluster.

For the original poster, looks as if the board that gauges are mounted on has come loose. That is odd as they are usually mounted with screws to the cluster. Many videos will show you how to access the bulbs but the work doesn’t typically call for loosening of the gauges themselves. I also noticed that your speedometer is in km. Is this a Canada/non-us vehicle?

Thanks for your comment. I also found the lighting to be quite unusual when I finally got to drive it at night as it wasn’t noticeable during the day. The edges appear rough and makes me question either why the gauges were touched or would come loose in the first place.

Per your last question, this is a non US spec HDJ import.

Have you asked the shop if they did that? Or maybe it's always been that way since you imported and just never drove at night?
I’ve asking and it appears their conversation doesn’t address my question. I’ve driven it at night to notice that it was never this way. No, it was never that way prior to taking it to the shop. Here’s a screenshot from a video while I was driving at night prior. Although it’s a motion shot, you can tell it’s not lit up like a maximum prison that it now looks appears to be afterwards.

I would say if the shop is not giving you the answer, I would be inclined to pull the cluster myself and see what’s going on. Perhaps they bumped the cluster on the table when they we switched the bulbs and the gauges came loose.

There are videos online for the cluster removal. I’ve done it on my uzj100 and it was not difficult. I don’t think the videos are specific enough for your HDJ import but others may chime in. Be careful if there are any ribbon cables that need to come off as you dig into this.

Thanks for guidance. I am planning on further inspection when I get a chance this weekend.

Not to sound silly but I haven't seen this mentioned, Have you tried turning the dimmer switch for the gauges down to see if that returns the lighting back lower to how it was previously?

Good question. I’ve done so. However, it became clearer that the issue was structural, which gave me the motivation to look closer (hence the first set of photos). The edges of the bezel sits behind the bulb rather than the other way round. That’s why there is a hallo effect at the top, rather than being backlit.
