Hello,

Thank you for the pictures.

1981 and 1982 were good model years for 40 Series Land Cruisers, I think.

Hello,

Thank you for the pictures.

1981 and 1982 were good model years for 40 Series Land Cruisers, I think.

Yes, the last 40 series shipped to Canada in 1984, and the last land cruiser shipped to Canada in 1989; they were all diesels.

I bought my first land cruiser when I was 21, it was only 8 years old, and it was $5000. This was before they were cool, before there were clubs, and long before simply liking a land cruiser brands you a member of a little understood cult.

But I was hooked.

I now am on my 6th, but 1st import direct from Japan. Glad you enjoyed the photos and nostalgia....

Well to my pleasant surprise, I had a couple of hours to run out to get a little more work done on the cruiser. I broke off one of the hanger bolts for the fuel tank, and they apparently show 0 available, at least from partsouq. I was not going to waste a lot of time hunting down bolts and such when I can get them locally. What DID surprise me is what they used for a bolt size. From what I could tell, it looks like an m11x1.25x50mm - no wonder they are MIA. I drilled and tapped it for m12x1.5x50mm as these are much more readily available

I also took time to clean the surface rust on everything -- tank, undercarriage, etc and used the POR metal prep and then coated everything with POR to seal it up again.

I also prewired the plug, and the nice thing is, if I have to mess with it at all the end I would need to work on is readily accessible at the back behind the fuel tank

Now I just need to be patient as I wait for the pickup and filler pipes for the tank then I can reassemble everything and test!

I was really excited to have my package show up today from Partsouq. Only to find they shipped all the parts EXCEPT for the pickup. This is the one part I HAVE to replace, the others were all just refreshing while I am in there anyways.

I see they have marked '0' for number shipped, so it is not like they forgot it. I see now on their site, they show 0 found when I look up the part number. I immediately checked amayama and they are showing ''no shipping to Canada'', not sure what that is about, but if I had to guess I would say that it probably has something to do with Trudeau

MegaZip showed some, so I ordered one from them and asked to ship fedex. Depending what they come back with, I may need to reach out to Dave and see what he can find or cross-reference for me.

It is a good thing I have a sense of humor and a spare vehicle! 🙄 😕

@Rigster ….. “not sure what that is about, but if I had to guess I would say that it probably has something to do with Trudeau”.

Thanks for the evening laugh. 😁

That is the one thing about Partsouq that drives me nuts: if they don't actually have a part in stock when you order they will just not send it and refund the money, they don't let the customer know that the part isn't available ahead of time or give an option to wait on the order.

Exactly... it would have been nice to know right away. I suppose since I waited this long, what's another couple of weeks or a month? It just stings a little more because I was expecting this to be it, and done. Got me hopes up... sigh

Not to be completely thwarted, I did do what I could and replaced the filler pieces:

The rubber piece for the filler was not available, but that was ok, because Toyota wants $55 for the little 8'' piece. I picked up the above DAYCO filler hose for $17cdn If you need the same piece, you will want the 1-7/8''

Now I need to find the time to hurry up and WAIT!!
😡

I do not normally like to have too many projects on the go at once, but last week I had this come in, and since I was simply waiting on part anyways, I didn't let fear and common sense stop me from diving right in...

I am going to provide my take on turbo's, intercoolers and engine temps...

First off, if you are going to turbo, and are on a shoestring budget - then I recommend you DON'T. Now, if you MUST, then I would recommend a good EGT gauge and becoming a dictator with your right foot to keep the EGT's and engine temps down.

For everyone else, bite the bullet early on and get the intercooler and PWR rad all at the same time. It will provide peace of mind and save a lot of work in the long run. Now why did I go with a PWR brand radiator and not one of the multi-core performance aluminum radiators from china? Well, it came down to simply that PWR did their due diligence and performance testing to be able to claim that their radiator will cool at least 30% better than the stock radiator. No other manufacturer made any claim around performance metrics or if their radiator would perform as good as the OEM.

I am not so rich as to be able to afford to purchase cheap.

I was impressed with the packaging they used to ship the radiator. The build quality is also evident. The order process is a little interesting, you contact them and tell them what you have, they sent me 3 drawing schematics of radiators for land cruisers and asked me to choose. So you then go and do your best to measure what you have and order the correct one.

So when it came time to install I had to make minimal adjustments, which I will go into in a bit. What did annoy me a little bit was the fact that there was no provision for attaching the fan shroud to the new radiator. I had to get creative with some self tapping metal roofing screws, pickup cap foam tape, butyl tape and some zip ties. I did not even have tear into the emergency supply of chewing gum and paper clips.

after positioning the shroud, trimming a bit here and there, I put one self tapping screw on each side where there is a little flange sticking out. I put truck capper foam tape on the radiator side, and butyl tape on the shroud side.
I then proceeded to put the whole hot mess into the engine bay

For the adjustments... the 2 side mounts were bang on, but the upper mounts were out by around 1/2 an inch. I pulled out the dremel and notched out the 2 top openings a little more and was able to drop it into place centred properly.

In order to get the new radiator in, I had to remove and reinstall the PDI intercooler as well. You would be able to avoid the extra labour doing it all at once.

Along the bottom I used zip-ties to add extra support to hold the fan shroud tight to the radiator.

My stock radiator is now for sale if anyone needs it....

So now I will have to test, though the real test will not be until things warm up a bit in the summer.

nice, I ordered a custom rad from them too, they had shroud attachment points like the factory, using rivnuts. the only thing I forgot to add to the build list was a drain, :(
:bang:
Doh! I hate it when that happens!

They have a pretty long waiting period (3 months) from the time you order, so I suppose in hind sight, the best way might be to take yours out to get exact measurements, take pictures and show them the profile of the fan shroud, etc. While mine came with the drain, I was missing 3 mount points and stays at the bottom of the rad for the shroud.

Like I said though, that added around 1.5 hrs of additional installation time to mitigate those deficiencies, but the end result is what counts. I layered some of the foam tape to seal the uneven gaps between the shroud and the radiator. It should be good! It is certainly better than it was as the old foam had long since disintegrated. The real test though, of course, will be when I need to haul my trailer in some hot summer weather through the mountains!

The innovative, illustrious and immutably resourceful Dave from Japan4x4 has come through once again and I received the following package:

Now I just need time to work on the tank and reinstall, refuel and test. It will be really nice to get the beast back on the road again. However, my wife's parents gave us a hot tub. So to install it right, I need to do some electrical work, and run power to where it will be. It was a great opportunity to teach my two younger boys about the value of hard work... like jack-hammering through the frozen ground so we could dig a trench for the power. All in all, it only took us about 4 hours.

They're good lads helping out their old man like that....

Teaser...

I brought these in for installing something I have sought worldwide for. I had people searching in Africa, UAE, Australia, and Japan. I thought I found them in Gibralter of all places but they refused to ship to Canada!! It was for something in the back of the 76. Any guesses??

Hint: (the need was brought on by having a family of six)

Fold up rear seats in the way back, cargo area?

Most excellent deduction @svsisu! I'll buy you a beer the next time you are in Armstrong! 💪

I was on a call with Rob at oddiron in Georgia and he had a full 76 series shell with the 3rd row seats, but unfortunately the complete package was already sold to a customer, however he did point me towards CruiserParts out of NH as he believed they had brought in 2 whole containers of parts.

Turns out these are brand new take-offs and they sold a pair to me for $400. They should actually be here today or tomorrow.

Lesson learned - Never give up on a search for unobtainiums! (making parts is ok too)

The seats in question:

I have yet to check and see if the body contains the all the captive nuts for installation, but that is why a purchased the M12 nutserts to make sure I install them with the utmost safety in mind.
However this weekend is dedicated to getting the Land Cruiser back on the road with the parts that came in from Dave in Japan. Then if I have time I will start looking into installing the 3rd row....
