the new winch, ain't it purdy?
installing the winch using a stubby 17 and a 1/2 extension.
a trick, when reaching to troubled areas a bit of tape will hold the nut in place while you bolt it up.

the fender "stiffener"...
the bumper sitting in place

that is it for today. it looks like i got a lot done but the big pieces are the easy ones, it is the small stuff that takes forever and doesn't appear to get much done.

thanks for following along.

Super-impressive rig.

the front bumper is the first component that underwhelmed me (actually, wait, blinker guards were first, but that was purely aesthetic and I can see why they are what they are)

Why did you decide to go with the rock-catcher front bumper? Seems like it'll hit before the tires get a chance to encounter obstacles.

The tires, by the way, look perfect on that rig. Burly, but ... refined.

shoot- I just realized that I'm so accustomed the excellent stuff, that all I really commented on was the thing I didn't like. My bad, Wayne!

I love the little steplet behind the fender-- I'm short, so being able to clean the windshield and whatnot .... is good.

The tape on the wrench- great tip.

That rig is really going to be something special, I'll bet the owner will be one heckofa happy customer when he drives it home.

Oh what a feeling!

Not speaking for Wayne, but, by law, front bumpers are suppose to cover front tires at least in BC. The rock crawling bumpers look much cooler, and I have one on my 40, but I don't DD it so I'm not worried about a ticket, or worse a VI.

I have no problem with negative feedback, everyone had personal tastes.
This rig, from what i understand, will be a 85-90% DD and some off road expedition type jaunts. the customer has already bought the bumper and i massaged it. for the money the bumper is actually a nice build. it keeps the vintage look but is much heavier steel than factory.
the light guards are extremely strong and you will bust the fiberglass fender (and these fenders are STRONG) before you ripe off the signal lights. i have lost signal pods in the past due to misjudged tree branches.
i am hoping he will be happy, time will tell.

these are the bumpers i use on my rigs: (more of a winch basket than anything)

plan for a drive up then... it is getting the front doors final fit before paint today...

I must have missed what brand those headlights are. Were they Roundeyes?

Fantastic!

I just spend over 30 min reading this whole thread - this is one of the sickest and coolest rebuild/refurb/restore threads I've ever seen. The rig is on target to looking absolutely fantastic!

You think your customer would mind if you sold it to me instead? ;-)

Utterly impressive and inspirational work, Wayne!

1 point 4...

next up, the long awaited snorkel.
bending the tabs (instead of cutting them)
welding
test fitting

i love the factory snorkel top, it fits the era perfectly. of course we coupld install a safari head but it just doesn't do the truck justice.
