I have decided to have the block dipped. I made the machinist so scared with all the talk of the oil pump bushing, he didn't dip it. I feel like it would be a compromise considering how much time and money i have spent to this point. As Dan likes to say "it would be like taking a bath and putting dirty clothes back on".

I'm waiting on a press tool from landtank to remove the oil pump bushing and then take the block for a dip/paint. If it is ruined i think that i have a local guy that can make one from brass as Landtank pointed out earlier.

Here is a picture of the fresh piston with new rings. Kind of neat how all the rings have to be oriented.

here is a picture of the numbers that are stamped on the connecting rod that help identify which bearing you will need. The heavy stamped 6 is from my machinist that did that before we realized i had to read the lightly stamped numbers. Luckily we could still read them all just fine.

My block was hot dipped in a solution the engine shop uses for all engine parts and is safe for use with aluminum. I told him about the bushing and he said there wouldn't be any issues and there wasn't - the bushing came up good as new. The block came up clean as, too.

It's just the really corrosive chemicals that do will make it disappear.

Oil Pump Bushing

This is part of what makes mud and the cruiser community so great! Rented a super great little tool to press the oil pump bushing out from Landtank! Thanks a ton, it worked great. It's a neat design too!

Here are a few pics of the tool and it in action. :cool:

Now i can get the block dipped and i really, double-stamp should be ready to assemble.

It is interesting to examine the oil pump bushing. It appears it is manufactured as a flat piece of steel with keyed ends and then is rolled and fitted together. I will try to get a better picture of that.

Also, in the hole where the oil pump bushing sits, there are two oiling holes, but the bushing covers one of them and allows oil to enter the bushing from the other. I wonder why that is?
 
It definitely looks like a lot of work but it'll be worth it once it's complete.:) I would go crazy having my 80 down for so long.:frown::)

It's really biting me now because the "original plan" was to have it finished now, so as christmas came and the snow came, i would have a fresh 80 ready to plow through and take me skiing and on some trips. Now, the snow is starting to fall, Christmas is almost here and i still haven't started putting it all together yet :mad::bang:

To make it worse, i don't have a garage i can put the truck in to reinstall the motor. So i'll be busting knuckles and laying on frozen ground soon instead of doing it while it was still comfortable out. :hillbilly::meh:
